About Anna Simpson Rayfield / Mason

Anna Simpson Arlington was born on February 24, 1812 at Accomack County, VA. She was the daughter of Thomas Bagwell Arlington (1788-1816) and Elizabeth Simpson (b. 1788) also of Accomack County, VA.

On September 24, 1818 Anna was named in John Arlington, wife Sophiah (her Grandfather's) Will at Accomack County, VA. She was willed $200.00.

Anna was named in a Guardian/Orphan Bond on September 25, 1820 at Accomack County, VA. Hannah S. Topping and Narhaniel Topping were bound unto John Cropper, James Gillett, John Custis and Thomas Parramore, Justices of the Court for $200.00. (On that same day, Hannah S. Topping was named Guardian of Ann S. Arlington, orphan of Thomas B. Arlington). Hannah S. Topping was instructed by the Court to deliver to Ann, her inheritance of $200.00 when she came of age.

On January 7,1829 Anna S. Arlington married Levi R. Rayfield, son of Levi R. Rayfield, Sr. of Accomack County, VA at Accomack County, VA. Henry P. Mister was Security on the MLB of Levi and Anna.

In July of 1844, Anna was named as an heir at Accomack County, VA. She was shown as Ann Rayfield, widow of Levi Rayfield, and left 50 acres in Doll's Swamp by Margaret Bayly. Upon Ann's death, it would go to her children. (Note: Margaret Bayly was the daughter of Mary Simpson & her husband Charles Bayly and the granddaughter of John Simpson (1700-1742). John Simpson had a daughter, Ann Simpson who married Thomas Wise Rogers; who had a daughter Hannah S. Rogers, who married 1st Southy Simpson and had a daughter, Elizabeth Simpson; who had a daughter Ann who married Levi Rayfield. Therefore, Margaret Bayly and Hannah were 1st cousins and Margaret Bayly was leaving 50 acres to the granddaughter of her 1st cousin. Ann, widow of Levi Rayfield had been widowed at age 27 with 4 small children and certainly in need.)

On March 26, 1849, Anna was named in John Arlington's (her uncle's) Will at Accomack County, VA. Ann was named as his niece and given a Negro boy, John until he reached 21.

In the 1850 Census, Anna was listed as head of household at St. George's Parish, Accomack County, VA. She was shown as Ann Rayfield, the head of HH# 149, age 37 with real estate valued at $400. Listed with her were the following Rayfields: James, 18 year old sailor; Major, a 16 year old student; Susan, Age 14 and Mary, age 12. Living next door in HH# 148 was Hannah Topping, age 86, who was her grandmother.

On November 24, 1851 Anna married Bagwell Custis Mason, son of Thomas Mason & Nancy Edwards of Accomack Co., VA. He was shown as Bagwell C. Mason, widower and Ann was shown as Ann Rayfield, widow of Levi. Her married name now became Mason.

Anna passed away on July 21,1852 at the age of 40. She was buried at Arlington Plot, Mt. Nebo Neck, Slutkill NK, Accomack County, VA. Her tombstone reads: Ann S. Mason, September 24, 1812 - July 21, 1852, erected by her grandmother Hannah Topping. (Note: Hannah Scarburgh Rogers married 1st Southy Simpson and had a daughter Elizabeth; who married Thomas Arlington, the parents of this Ann Simpson Arlington Rayfield Mason. After Southy's death, Hannah married Garrett Topping and she remained his widow from 1817 until her death in 1855).

The Administration of Anna's estate was filed July 26, 1852 at Accomack County, VA. It was on this date that Bagwell C. Mason was named to settle the estate. William H. Belote & John E. Amos were Securities.

The children of Anna S. Arlington & Levi R. Rayfield are: James T. Rayfield (1832-1883); Major (of Levi R.) (1835-1904); Susan A. Rayfield (b 1836) and Mary E. Rayfield (b 1838).
