About Anna Magdalena Rhyne
GEDCOM Note
Biography She married Peter Rhyne around 1777 and had several children with him. He died in 1828 leaving much of the land to their son Simon, but leaving the house and rest of the estate to Anna Magdelena.[1][2]
In the 1830 census she appears as the "Widow Rhyne." She was in her 70s and she had one son in his 30s living with her and 17 enslaved persons.[3]
In 1840 she was listed in the census in her eighties as the head of household, with one son in his 40s (Simon?). Also listed with her were 28 enslaved people.[4]
In 1850 she was 89 and living in Gaston County, NC with son Simon, age 50, and a possible granddaughter Elizabeth age 25.[5] She was listed as a farmer and the head of household with $5000 worth of real estate.
She is likely buried at Cloninger-Derr Cemetery in Gaston County with her husband, Peter Rhyne.[6] A self-published history of the Rhyne and other families from 1915 records that she is buried next to Peter. "Marble slabs mark their graves inscribed as follows: 'In memory of Peter Rhyne who died July 8th, 1828, in the 74th year of his age.' 'Anny M Rhyne died June 13th, 1854, aged 94 years'[7]
