Anne (Torrey) Dunster was the oldest of Phillip Torrey and Alice Richard's 7 children. She was born 17 Oct 1605 in Combe St. Nicholas.

Family

Anne's family was wealthy with a good reputation and as we see from her younger brother, William, married successful merchants from Bristol(?). When her parents died, they were buried in St. Nicholas Church in Combe St. Nicholas. She married Henry Dunster 8 May 1627 at 22 years of age in the church of Combe St. Nicholas.

Property

Anne had received 3 score pounds when she was 16 shortly after her father died. 3 score is 60 pounds.

Death and Estate

Putting her family's circumstance in perspective, her father,

  • Phillip was buried 27 Jun 1621, 6 years before her marriage. She was 16 years old -- old enough to accept the benefits given her by Phillips will.
  • She died 4 years later in 1631 when she was 26, before she and Henry had children.
  • Anne had been dead 9 years when her brothers left for Weymouth, Massachusetts in 1640.

Research Questions

Where she was buried becomes important to a bigger story. Was she buried in Combe St. Nicholas with the Torreys or did she and Henry Dunster live elsewhere?

Is it just coincidence that there is a Henry Dunster that was the first President of Harvard took his office in 1640? at Weymouth, Massachusetts?
