Samuel Rider was baptized on June 19, 1601, the son of John Rider and Helen Smith of Newport Pagnell, Buckingham, England [1]. This bapt. record is probably for Samuel although the date shows July instead of June of the same year[2] One is no doubt an error.

On October 16, 1628, he married Anne Gamlett, at Allsaints (or Allhallows) Northampton, England[1]. [3] He and Anne emigrated with their family to New England, and were settled in Yarmouth, Barnstable, Massachusetts on January 7, 1638 or 1639[1] [4]

Their children included:

  1. Jane, born October 4, 1629 in Northampton, England, buried September 5, 1631[1]
  2. Parvulus (Latin for unnamed baby), buried August 27, 1631, less than a year old[1]
  3. Samuel, baptized November 25,1632 in Northampton; who married Sarah Bartlett, daughter of Robert Bartlett and Mary Warren on December 23, 1656 in Massachusetts[1] [5], and then married Lydia Tilden on June 14, 1680 in Taunton Massachusetts[5][6]
  4. Jane, baptized November 23, 1634, in England, who was alive when mentioned in her father's will. [7] No further record found [1]
  5. John, baptized December 4, 1636 in England[1]
  6. Zachariah, born circa 1638 in Yarmouth, Massachusetts, who married Mary Sturgis[1]
  7. Benjamin, born circa 1640 in Yarmouth, Massachusetts, who married Mary Gray[1]
  8. Elizabeth, born circa 1642 in Yarmouth, Massachusetts, who married John Cole, the son of James Cole and Mary Tibbs on November 21, 1667 in Plymouth[1]
  9. Joseph, born circa 1644 in Yarmouth, Massachusetts, who married Sarah Matthews[1]
  10. Mary, born in Yarmouth, Massachusetts on September 6, 1647, who was alive when mentioned in her father's will. [7] No further record found[1]

He was called Lieutenant in the Plymouth Colony records[8]

Samuel Rider Sr died on December 2, 1679 in Yarmouth, Barnstable, Massachusetts[1] [9]

His will was written on November 20, 1679 he names: [7]

  • sons Benjamin, John, Samuel, Zachary and Joseph
  • daughters Jane, Elizabeth and Mary [7]
