Anne Sacks, along with her daughters, aged 16 and 18, was a passenger on El Al Flight 402, which was shot down by two Bulgarian MiG-15 jet fighters and crashed near Petrich, Bulgaria, killing all passengers and crew aboard. They were coming to Israel to join their husband and father, Max Sacks, a brother of the silk manufacturer of Ramat Gan. Max Sacks had arrived a few days earlier to examine the possibilities of settling and had asked his family to join him in deciding where to live.
