He named eldest son Matthew and son John, daughters Jane, Elizabeth, Maria, Amye, Johane, and Anne Pepper; grandchildren Hercules and Margaret Arthur and Henry and Ande Caldam, "my sister, the wife of Richard Rathbone," and Hercules Stephens. With the exception of Stephens, every beneficiary was identified as a relative.

  • Matthew1 Whipple (MatthewA) was born about 1590 in Bocking, Essex County, England and died 28 September 1647 in Ipswich, Essex County, Mass. He married twice. (1) Anne Hawkins in Bocking 7 May 1622. She is the daughter of John Hawkins and Mary Levitt. (2) Rose Chute, widow of Lionel Chute, in Ipswich on 13 November 1646. She is the daughter of Robert Baker or Barker. A clothier, Matthew migrated to New England in 1638. He was a farmer in the new world.

He held the chief offices in town, and was on some of its most important committees. He had a brother John who settled in Ipswich, and perhaps a brother David who settle in Rhode Island, on a place called Study Hill, (Cumberland?) Matthew had two wives, 1st. by whom he had his children. 2d. Rose (Chute?) m'd Nov. 13, 1646, who outlived him.

Anne Hawkins, the daughter of John Hawkins, married Matthew Whipple May 7, 1622 at Bocking, Essex, England. She was born about 1600, and died, probably at Ipswich, Massachusetts, about 1643.≤ref>Donald Lines Jacobus, "The Granberry Family and Allied Families" (Hartford 1945), page 347.≤/ref>

She had a brother John who left a will that refers to her as "sister Whipple":

John Hawkins of Brayntree, Essex, Gen. 3 September 1633, proved 18 October 1633. To wife Sara meassuages lands and tenements in Tolleshunt,Bushes, Salcott, Wigborough and Veryley which I late had and purchased of Sir Edward Bullocke, knight. Francis Steele and Elizabeth his wife, John Hewes and Elizabeth his wife formerly the wife of ___ Steele, John Osborne (and others), for and during her natural lfe; and the messuage wherein I dwell in Brayntree and the two little tenements adjoining unto the churchyard of Brayntree so long as she shall keep herselfa widow and unmarried after my decease. To oldest son John messuages and lands in Barking (and other parishes). To son Robert messuages andtenements in Old Newton, Suffolk. To son Abraham the messuage whereinI dwell (and other lands and tenements). To my daughter Sara six hundred pounds at her age of eighteen and again at the age of one and twenty. To my daughter Margaret five hundred pounds at eighteen and again at one and twenty. To my daughter Mary messuages, etc. in Bradwell next the sea. To my daughter Judith messuages, etc., in Finchefield, Essex. To my brother in law John Kent one hundred marks for his care and pains to be taken as one of the executors. To my loving friend Mr. Collns of Brayntree forty shillings to buy him a ring, and also four pounds per annum during his ministry there. To my mother Mary Hawkins, widow, sixteen pounds a year, etc. To my friend William Lingwood twenty pounds. To my sister Kent and my sister Edes thirty shillings apiece to make them rings. To my brother Francis Hawkins, my sister Archer and my sister Whipple forty shillings apiece as remembrances from me. To mycousin Tomson, my aunt Woodward and my aunt Goodaye ten shillings apiece. Loving friends and neighbors Adrian Mott and Joseph Loomys also mentioned. Joseph Loomys one of the witnesses.
