About Annie Russel Robinson

From"Cousins and Others" section 10:

Annie Russel was born the 10th child of Lewis and Margaret. She was born on the 11th November 1856 at the foot of Hanging Rock in Central Victoria, near Carlsruhe.

Annie married Samuel Robinson on 20th October 1876. Samuel was born on 1 August 1851 at Brighton and lived in the area until approximately 1868 following which he moved with his family to the Newham area to take up farming.

The Lands Act of 1869 then allowed selectors to take up land. In about 1870, Samuel, now 19, was living on the farm at Newham (VIC) and started thinking about obtraining his own land. It is believed that about this time he could have met Annie Wiseman who would have been 14. Her father had a farm a short distance to the north.

By 1884 Samuel had title to his own land. Samuel and his brother James went lookin for land. They headed towards Shepparton (VIC) on horse back. The Goulburn River was in flood and stopped them at Murchison. The turned towards Merrigum (VIC) where land was being conveyed and chose two blocks of 320 acres beside each other and to the east of Merrigum with a road between the farms. To obtain money for the purchase they obtained bullocks and wagosn to cart goods to railway constructions going on line to Bendigo (VIC). Samuel and James needed pounds25.0.0 each as a deposit for the land. The titles bore a date of 14 February 1884. The original house erected was made of logs and hessian divisions.

By World War I the land had been cleared and crops planted. For reasons unknown the produce needed to be transported to Echuca (VIC) for sale.

Samuel and Annie had ten children between 1878 and 1896. Alexander (born in 1894), Annie his wife, and Annie (born in 1896) passed away in September 1895, April 1896 and Christmas 1896 respectively. The three deaths occurred within 15 months and all three were buried in the same grave.

It is said that Samuel was a man unable to pass on his knowledge to his family. His brother James, who married Emma Black, was better able to teach Samuel Junior about the aspects of life and family. He was shown how to build a hay stack with sheath using match boxes.

When Samuel Junior was a young man he told his son, Lou, how the used to travel to visit both parents at Newham (VIC) and Hanging Rock (VIC). The family would travel from Byrnseide (VIC) by horse and dray, and be on the road for two nights. One of the nights would be at Colbinnabin (VIC) with Alex Wiseman and other Wisemans. They would also call in on the Hamblins at Toolleen 20 kilometres on, where they would get cool drinks. The Hamblins were cheese makers and the grandparents of Norman Hamblin who married Lorna Robinson, the grand daughter of James Robinson and Ada Humphries. The Hamblins were original settlers in the area.

The 2nd night they stopped at Heathcote, camping under the dray, and would reach their destination the next day.

John Senior died on 5 October 1891 from influenza and bronchitis. James, Samuel and Andrew Crozier (who married Mary, Samuels' sister) were executors of his will so Samuel and James would have travelled on that occasaion. Their mother, Anne Bruce Murphy, died on 8 January 1882 from paralysis.
