Anthappa Shenoy
He was called Anthappa Shenoy before conversion to Christianity. He and his son Manu were converted abut the year 1750. His two brothers remained Hindus. He lived in Mulki.
The Aranhas of Gazni are one of the most important Mangalorean
families to hail from outside Mangalore proper. For over two centuries,
this has been the leading Catholic family of the Mulki area and its
members have married into leading families of other areas such as the
Colacos of Moodbidri, the Mathiases of Belman and the Rebellos of
Kallianpur.
More significantly, the Gazni Aranha family is one of the very few
Mangalorean families whose genealogy can be traced back to the time of
conversion. Its earliest known member was Anthony Aranha, born about the
year 1710, who is said to have started life bearing the Konkana name
Anthappa Shenoy. He married before his conversion and is known to have had
one son named Mannu. Father and son were converted about the year 1750 and
took the names Anthony and Manuel respectively. About the same time, they
migrated (from Goa) to Gazni, near Mulki.
Anthappa Shenoy had two other brothers who remained Hindus; one
settled at Udyavar and is said to be the ancestor of the Shenoy Brothers
(booksellers of Mangalore); another settled in Mulki and is thought to be
the ancestor of Vittalray Shenoy of Mulki.
It is not known if Anthappa Shenoy had other children apart from
Mannu. If he did have other sons, they either remained unmarried or
migrated to other parts. All known members of the Gazni Aranha family
descend from Manuel Aranha, but the surname Aranha is also to be found in
the old church records of parishes such as Shirva and Kirem. Baptismal
records at Shirva date back to 1860, and as one member of the Gazni Aranha
family is believed to have settled at Shirva in the early 19th century, it
is possible that these are his descendants. But marriage records at Kirem
go back to 1815 and there appear to have been quite a few Aranhas residing
at Kirem parish in the beginning of the 19th century. These cannot possibly
be descendants of Manuel Aranha and the family is either a different one
or is comprised of descendants of a brother of Manuel Aranha
