INDEPENDENCE, Wis. - Anton "Tony" Sylla, 92, of Independence died Monday, Oct. 27, 2003, at Franciscan-Skemp Healthcare Hospital, Arcadia, Wis.

He was born May 14, 1911, in Burnside Township, Trempealeau County, to Albert and Anna (Manka) Sylla. He married Gertrude Smieja on Feb. 10, 1938, in Milwaukee.

Tony owned and operated the Mobil Gas Station in Independence, worked on construction and was a self-employed welder. Tony was a loving husband, father and family man. He enjoyed his outdoor activities including fishing, hunting, trapping, gardening and his bees.

Tony was a member of SS. Peter & Paul Catholic Church and served on its cemetery board. He was a member of Elk Rod & Gun Club and the Independence Fire Department. He served on the Tri-County Telephone Board and the City of Independence Water Board.

Survivors include his wife, Gertrude of Independence; two daughters, Karen (special friend Bill Horton) of Independence and Barbara (Dave) Gorski of Milwaukee; son-in-law, Johnny Beatty of Leesburg, Fla.; four grandchildren, Michael (Julie) and Steve (Stacy) Gorski, John Beatty and Tina (Greg) David; five great-grandchildren, Matthew, Samantha, Victoria and Laina Gorski and Zachary David.

Tony was preceded in death by a daughter, Sharon Beatty; three infant children; five brothers, Henry, Ben, Steve, Eddie and Dominic Sylla; two sisters, Katie McKinney and Elizabeth Taft.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 1, 2003, at SS. Peter & Paul Catholic Church, Independence, with the Very Rev. Douglas C. Robertson officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday and 8 to 10 a.m. Saturday at Edison Funeral Home, Independence, where there will be a rosary at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
