...Archibald Newell Hill, was born 20 Aug. 1816 in Abbey, Renfordshire, Scotland to Alexander Perley Hill and Elizabeth Currie Hill. When Archibald was three years old their family moved to Canada, that is were he spent his youth.He married Isabella Hood on 21 Feb 1840.At that time they had two children, Samual Hood Hill,he married Audrey Payne, Martha Thomas,Jane Seamon, and Hannah Hood Hill, she married Miles Park Romney. Archibald and family left Canada in 1842, he left to Nauvoo by the way of Chicago , the great city at this time, being a merge post and trading station. He became introduced to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter -day Saints, in Nauvoo he was baptized.Archibald helped build the Nauvoo Temple, he was a crane worker. Archibald was attacked by a mob, and went through bitter times. Archibald left Nauvoo, and was one of the company which left Winter Quarters in June of 1847.
Archibald's wife Isabella Hood died at Winter Quarter one month after child birth of Rebecca Hood Hill on 20 March 1847.Rebecca maried Edwin Pettit.
Archibald arrived in Salt Lake City Utah in September 1847.
He helped build houses, and then was a farmer, he was a bountiful farmer considering the conditions of Aug. of 1948. His farm is the land which the Seventeenth ward meeting house now sits on. He donated his land to the church. Archibald was a Patriarch of the church and served many mission in England, Scotland.He was with the company from Salt Lake to the South Pass to meet President Young, and at that occasion, Archibald presented Prsident Young with a Utah raised watermelon, the first President young had ever seen.
Archibald had charge of the general tithing office at Salt Lake for fourteen years, he was chararterized by steerling honesty. Archibald was also a merchant of a dry good store and succeeded fairly. Archibald married Margaret Fotheringham on 12 July 1857 in Salt Lake City, Utah. They had five children, Charlotte Nash Hill she was adopted by Archibald, she married Jacob Albert Grosbeck, Isabella Fotheringham Hill, Lezetta Fotheringham Hill, Newell Archibald Hill, Frank Fotheringham. Margaret Fotheringham Hill died 14 Oct.1887. Archibald also married Mary Emma Milam on 25 Dec.1853 in Salt Lake City, Utah.They had two children, Emma Elizabeth Hill Fairchild, she married Theodore Thomas,William Frances Hill Fairchild, he married Frances Plamado.Mary Emma Milam divorsed Archibald, she moved to Placerville, California, and married Mahlon Fairchild, and the Archibald's two children took on his name Fairchild. Mary Emma Milam Hill Fairchild died 4 Sept 1913 in Denver, Colorado at her daughter Emma's house. Archibald also married Caroline Graham on 7 March 1857 in Salt Lake City, Utah. They had five children , Sarah Louisa Hill, she married Nephi Lorenzo Cross, Martha Ellen, she never married, Perley Alexander Hill, he married Edith Hodges, Then they had twins, Daniel Leroy Hill, he died at five months 15 July 1874 and Audrey Graham, she died young on 16 Jan 1891, she never married.
Archibald died at the home of Caroline Graham Hill, with his family by his side. Caroline Graham Hill died 26 June 1906. Archibald Newell Hill is buried in the Salt Lake City Cemetery, and on his grave it is written "HE KEPT THE Faith"..."
