About Armer Reed

Birth: Feb. 18, 1805 Kentucky, USA Death: Oct. 1, 1882 Warrick County Indiana, USA

Armer Reed was born in Kentucky on February 18, 1805. He was one of thirteen children born to George Reed. Armer's family moved to Perry County, Indiana, when he was ten years old, in 1815, and then to Warrick County in 1817. In February 1823, Armer married Mary Phillips who had migrated to Indiana with her parents in 1816. Armer is listed among the early settlers of Owen Township in Warrick County. He became a prominent citizen of the county. By 1844 he was a justice of the peace. In 1849, he was the representative of Warrick County in the state legislature. He was a Whig at that time but became a Republican after 1860. He was defeated for state office in 1850. As Armer continued to develop his interest as a farmer and merchant in the Folsomville area, his work in politics was apparently profitable. Armer Reed had two sons and at least two grandsons who fought in the Civil War. Some young men wanted to organize a company and have Armer elected captain. He was about to agree when he heard that another man was buying votes in order to get himself elected captain so Armer gave up the idea.

History indicates that Armer and Mary had a total of nine children. Possibly due to the early death of one, records for only eight have been found and included on the sheet for this family. After four weeks of illness with typhoid fever, Armer Reed died on October 1, 1882 and is buried in the Reed Graveyard. Mary lived until 30 May 1893.
