Arnold Nagel Passes Away After Lingering Illness- It becomes our sad duty to chronicle the death of an old and most highly respected resident of this community, Arnold Nagel. He passed away Saturday night at 10 o'clock after an illness of several months caused by cancer of the stomach.
The deceased was born at Sterckrade, Rhine Province, Germany, May 26, 1845. He came to America in 1866 and lived for a short time near Cross Plains, Wis. From there he went West where he worked in the Mining districts of Idaho, California, and Nevada for six years.
On Feb. 29, 1876 he was married to Miss Elizabeth Sitzman at Cross Plains, Wis. The same year Mr. Nagel accompanied by his wife came to Minnesota and settled upon the homestead about 5 miles southeast of Pierz, where the family has lived ever since. Eleven children have been born to Mr. and Mrs. Nagel, two of whom are dead. Those living are John, Henry, Theodore, Joseph, Hubert, Frank, Mary, Paulina and Mrs. W. B. Schreiner. All are unmarried and live a home except Mrs. Schreiner who lives at Little Falls.
Mr. Nagel was one of the sturdy pioneers who helped to reclaim this section from its wild state and convert it into a veritable garden. He endured privations and hardships of pioneer life with which the present generation is entirely unacquainted. He lived a good, honest, industrious, Christian life which won for him the highest esteem of all who knew him. The heartfelt sympathy of the whole community is extended to the bereaved family.
The funeral was held Tuesday morning at 10 o'clock at the St. Joseph's church. [Pierz Journal, Dec. 9, 1909]
