<p> </p><p><p>Arnold J. Pendleton</p></p><p><p></p></p><p><p>Arnold J. Pendleton, 83, of La Crosse died Saturday, Feb. 7, 2004, at the La Crosse Nursing Home in Fran-ciscan Skemp Healthcare Medical Center.</p></p><p><p></p></p><p><p>He was born in La Crosse on May 21, 1920, to Roy and Sophia (Hanifl) Pendleton. He married Gertrude Fontish on Jan. 10, 1942, at St. James the Less Catholic Church in La Crosse.</p></p><p><p></p></p><p><p>Arnold attended St. John's Parochial School and later graduated from Logan High School in 1939. He served for three years with the Army Air corps as a tower operator at Fort Lewis, Wash., during World War II. He was employed by the La Crosse Trane Co. for 43 years before retiring in 1982, and was a member of the Trane Co. 25 Year Club.</p><p><p></p></p><p><p>Arnold was a man of many talents, especially working with wood. He enjoyed building pieces of furniture for his children and helping them with any repairs. He also enjoyed making toys and high chairs for his grandchildren.</p><p><p></p></p><p><p>Arnold always kept himself busy. He was a fisherman and an avid golfer, and especially enjoyed a game of golf with his family. He also enjoyed the company of his friends at Fish's Bar. Arnold also loved to visit job sites around La Crosse and watch the building being done, and was known as La Crosse's self-appointed "official sidewalk supervisor." He was a long-time member of St. James Parish in La Crosse.</p><p><p></p></p><p><p>He is survived by his wife, Gertrude; eight children, Donna (Robert) Kostecki of Ettrick, Wis., Robert (Phyllis) Pendleton of La Crosse, Richard (Janelle) Pendleton of La Crosse, Mary (Daniel) Johnson of Chippewa Falls, Wis., Jean (Peter) Smith of La Crosse, John Pendleton of La Crosse, Patricia (Patrick) McKenney of Green Bay, Wis., and Judy (Rick) Kehr of La Crosse; 18 grandchildren, and 16 great-grandchildren. He is further survived by two sisters, Mary Ryan of Kenosha and Evelyn Ogden of Milwaukee; one brother, Joseph Pendleton of La Crosse; and many nieces and nephews. Arnold was preceded in death by one granddaughter, Jana Lee Kostecki; one sister, Margaret Niles; and four brothers, Edward, Howard, Raymond and Arthur Pendleton.</p><p><p></p></p><p><p>In accordance with his wishes, Arnold's body will be cremated, with burial taking place in Gate of Heaven Cemetery at a later date.
