About Arthur Arderne Clarence
About Arthur Arderne CLARENCE: Born on 2/12/1882 in Grahamstown, the son of Arthur Robert Clarence & Floretta Mandeville Clarence (nee Rhodes) His mother was a British subject & when her marriage collapsed, she returned to London in 1891 & was living at Longton Grove, Lewisham with her children (1891 Census). A A Clarence was educated at Rugby School 1896-1899, & entered Exeter College, ,Oxford where he passed an honours degree in modern history in 1904. He then attended the London School of Art run by Frank Brangwyn, J M Swan and C P Townsley. He may have attended Frank Brangwyn's 1905 summer school held in Belgium? However, in 1908 Arderne Clarence set up as an artist at 3 Holland Lane, High Street, Kensington. One of his paintings was reviewed in a Devon newspaper, the Weston Times. The painting showed a medieval tower in the background with a Flemish girl standing hand in hand with a young man in a blue blouse & clogs. The Royal Academy exhibited some of Arderne's paintings between 1908 & 1912, including : An Eastern Well, A Procession, & Mongoose versus Cobra. An Eastern Market was also exhibited in the Municipal Gallery in 1910 to much acclaim in the Cheltenham Looker. On the 11/9/1914 he joined the 2/1st Hampshire Yeomanry as a private, and received training during which he was made a Lance Corporal (4/11/1914) at Canterbury, Kent. The 2/1st Hampshire Yeomanry was originally a Territorial Force & then became a cyclist unit, that remained in the United Kingdom with its Head Quarters at Winchester until May 1918, when it moved to Ireland. In May 1918, Arderne was a 2nd Lieutenant & was given a staff appointment in the Mediterranean lines of communication, being stationed with the Deputy Director, General Transportation in Italy. In 1919 Arderne left the army as a Captain & in May of that year, he was awarded a military O.B.E.
He married Beryl Ethel Elisabeth Souter at Kensington in 1921 & they had three children, two daughters and a son. Their names were Rosamund Dawn Clarence, Sybil Diana Clarence & Ian Arderne Souter Clarence. In 1938, he married again to his second wife Valerie, & they lived at Nunton House near Salisbury.
In 1935, Arderne Clarence exhibited again at the Royal Academy (794) Louvre Bridge, Paris and in 1937 (25) White Turkey. In 1936, the Western Morning News printed a review of his painting The Bridge of Alcantara. At this time he was living at Western Gate, Sandbanks, Bournemouth. He also exhibited at the Walker Gallery in Liverpool and in the London Salon. He painted in all media,& was particularly well-known for his seascapes & etchings. He also painted a few still lifes & Family Portraits. Arderne Clarence travelled widely & in later life, one of his hobbies was breeding & exhibiting cage birds. He died in 1966.
