About Arthur Gurney

GEDCOM Note

Name Name for Arthur Gurney was obtained from the Birth Register and Marriage Register for Amy Gurney (daughter).

Date of Brith DOB has been determined from an 'original' copy of the birth register entry for Arthur Gurney in the posession of Norman Bryan. A fresh copy will be ordered to improve image quality. DOB is further coroborated by Census entried for 1901 and 1881, although a census entry for 1891 has so far proved elusive.

Date of Death DOD and burial information has been identified through a memorial card in the possession of Janet and Norman Bryan. A death register entry has now been obtained. Interestingly, there was a post-mortem and coroner's inquest.

Census Records A search of the 1901 census for Arthur Gurney born 1878-1880 (based on an old birth register entry - see above) returned only one strong entry - Arthur Gurney, b1879 in Upton on Severn. It is known by Norman Bryan that the family has roots in Upton on Severn, so this indicates a strong match. Furthermore, the entry is for Arthur resident in Duddeston, Birmingham, which matches with later Birth Register entries for his daughter, Amy Gurney.

Similarly there is only one decent matching record for the 1881 census, indicating parents Samuel and Sarah which also matches with Arthur's birth register entry. Hence we can be assured this also is a good match.

No matching records are found for the 1891 census unfortunately. This includes a search for both parents and all siblings, expanding out the ages to +/- 10 years. The conclusion is that the both Samuel and Sarah have died and the family has been broken up, or the family are not living in the UK at this point, or finally that the census record has been lost. The only sibling to be found is Herbert, who is a boarder in Pontypridd, Wales.

Date of Marriage The usual process of finding both partners on the marriage index has been followed, and indentified the correct GRO reference.
