About Arthur Willkings Newkirk, Jr.

Arthur Wilkings Newkirk Jr. was born in Wilmington, NC on May 11th, 1923 to Arthur W. Newkirk Sr and Loretta (Spivey) Newkirk.

Arthur graduated Erskine college in Due West, SC where he played college baseball and football. He then entered the US Marines during World War II. Boxed in the Golden gloves and was the Paris Island boxing champion while in the Marines. After serving in the military he became a High-school English and History teacher as well as a Coach. He coached all 3 sports at one time or the other but loved coaching Men's Varsity baseball as well as Ladies Varsity Basketball.

He loved all sports especially Golf.

He was loved by his students and players. He passed away very young at 42 from a heart attack leaving behind his wife Elsie (Moore) Newkirk, 4 year old daughter Jane and 7 month old son Arthur III and the community stunned.

50 years later his former students and players got together and celebrated his life with a memorial.

Like his Father, he was proud of his heritage and Mayflower connection and was a member of the Mayflower Society having 8 Great Grandfathers and Great Grandmothers as passengers.

Grandparents on board the Mayflower include, 9th GGF John Howland & wife 9th GGM Elizabeth (Tilley) Howland 10th GGF John Tilley & wife, 10th GGM oan (Hurst) Tilley 9th GGF James Chilton & wife, 9th GGM Mrs. James Chilton and daughter 8th GGM Mary (Chilton) Winslow 9th GGF Edward Doty.

Arthur Jr. as well as his Dad, Arthur Sr., son, Arthur III and Grandson Arthur IV, are named in honor of Arthur Jr's Great Uncle, Dr. William Crawford Willkings. He was the last person to die in a Political duel in the South in 1856.
