About Arthur Willkings Newkirk, Sr.

Arthur W. Newkirk Sr. was a successful North Carolina businessman. Owning one of the first Cadillac dealerships in Eastern North Carolina in Wilmington, New Hanover county. He was an avid sports fisherman and set many fishing records piloting his own boat's. Arthur had two sons, Arthur Jr. and David Newkirk.

He was born in Wilmington, North Carolina and always enjoyed the ocean. Loved to fish and pilot his boats and loved automobiles. He started as a mechanic when the first cars were produced. He worked on the first Motel "T" Fords and later owned his own dealerships with Foy Automobiles, Overland cars, Willys-Knight Autos, Cole-8 Automobiles and Packard's. Then started selling Cadillac and Oldsmobile's at his dealership.

Arthur W. Newkirk was a member of the Mayflower society having a total of 8 direct descendants on board the Mayflower and many other relatives. One Great Grandfather was John Howland "Mayflower passenger", his 8th Great Grandfather.

Grandparents on board the Mayflower include, 8th GGF John Howland & wife 8th GGM Elizabeth (Tilley) Howland 9th GGF John Tilley & wife, 9th GGM oan (Hurst) Tilley 8th GGF James Chilton & wife, 8th GGM Mrs. James Chilton and daughter 7th GGM Mary (Chilton) Winslow 8th GGF Edward Doty.

Arthur Sr. as well as his son, Arthur Jr., Grandson, Arthur III and Great Grandson Arthur IV, are named in honor of Arthur Sr's Uncle, Dr. William Crawford Willkings. He was the last person to die in a Political duel in the South in 1856.
