Arthur Cannell was born the third child of Clifford Cannell and Maria Meltina Mollett (Molly). His father was the leader of The Edenburg Trek into Gazaland, Rhodesia. Molly died when Arthur was about four years old of heart problems. About two years after she died, Arthur's Father died of Black Water Fever. By this stage Arthur's oldest brother, Reginald, had left Rhodesia to join one of his aunts in the Eastern Cape to obtain an education. (Melsetter in Gazaland hadn't any schools). When Arthur and his sister, Alice were orphaned, they were sent to Johannesburg, to be raised by Clifford's sister, Rosetta Isabel (Aunt Bell) and husband, William Spackman.
