ARTHUR E. THOMAS, 45, widely known insurance man, died at the Washington County Hospital yesterday afternoon from a self-inflicted bullet wound in the head. The acting coroner, gave a verdict of suicide and deemed an inquest unnecessary.
Mr. Thomas was found in his apartment at a local hotel yesterday morning. A guest heard the report of the revolver and notified Mrs. Thomas who was waiting for her husband in the hotel lobby. He had purchased the revolver at a hardware store shortly before shooting himself. Friends of Thomas said he had been despondent over financial difficulties.
He was a son of the late Edward S. and Annie (Lumm) Thomas. Besides his widow, Hazel Thomas, the following survive: daughter, Audrey; sons, Brayden, Charles and Roger, all of Hagerstown; mother, Mrs. Annie Thomas, Sharpsburg; sisters, Mrs. Frank Hoover, Leitersburg; Mrs. John Neikirk, Sharpsburg; Mrs. Ira DeLauder, this city; and Mrs. Bernard Daley, Baltimore; brothers, Frank, George and Charles, Sharpsburg; William, Shepherdstown; Howard and Norman, Williamsport; and Clarence Thomas, this city.
He was a member of the Christ Reformed Church, Elks Lodge and First Hose Fire Company.
Funeral services were held at the home of his father-in-law, J.G. Arnica, 4187 Porter Avenue, Martinsburg, WV; interment was in Mount Hebron Cemetery, Winchester, Va.
