About Arthur (Augustus) Wienholt
Arthur was actually christened Augustus. His birth and baptism details are recorded in a red leather pocket book which has come down the family. This states that Augustus was born on 30 May 1835 at Goodrington Sands, near Paignton, Devon, and baptised at Paignton a month later on 29 June.
Arthur was present at the premature death of his brother Daniel in Australia in 1865. When his own first son was born the following year, he named him Daniel.
At the time of his daughter Emma's wedding, he was described as 'of Fassifern, Queensland'.
Reported in the Queensland Figaro, Brisbane, 26 January 1929, as a footnote to his daughter Abra's marriage to Pierre de Lessenevitch: "It will be interesting to many to learn that the late Arthur Wienholt was the youngest son of Mr. John Birkett Wienholt and Mrs. Wienholt. He was identified with local government in the Maranoa district, his wife being Elizabeth Charlotte, daughter of the late William Hutton, a commissioner of the Indian Service, the marriage taking place at Calcutta Cathedral in 1863, upon the same day as the late King Edward 7th and Queen Alexandra were married in England."
The National Probate Calendar reports: WEINHOLT, Arthur of Herons Ghyll near Uckfield, Sussex, Esq. died 6 July 1892 at Ticehurst, Hawkhurst, Kent. Administration (with will) London 20 May to Elizabeth Charlotte Wienholt widow. Effects £5.
A record at the National Archives dated November 1888 reveals that Arthur had been admitted to the Woodlands Asylum, Ticehurst, with mental illness (described at that time as lunacy).
