Arvetta moved to Mexico, Missouri after she graduated from high school and lived with her cousin Geneva Minks and Geneva's husband Mack. Arvetta started working at A. P. Green Fire Brick Co. in Mexico where she met and married John P. Gavin Jr. on 25 Feb 1950.
Arvetta's family will always remember her for her apple pie with a french crumble topping. It was loved by everyone. Another dish she often made for family get-togethers was cherry cheesecake which the grandchildren loved. Her grandsons especially loved her macaroni and cheese.
