About Pvt. Asa Harmon McCoy

Asa was a veteran of the Civil War, serving as a private in Co. E 45th Regiment, Kentucky Infantry, Union Army. He is listed as "Asa H. McCay" in "The Union Regiments of Kentucky", pg. 629.

Asa was killed after returning home from the War, by Jim Vance. The reason for his killing was that many in Pike Co., KY believed him to be a "traitor" because he fought on the side of the Union, while almost everyone else from that area supported the Confederacy. This was one of the reasons given for the longstanding and tragic Hatfield McCoy feud in which many murders occurred. Asa's burial location is not known, but it is believed he is buried nearby where he was ambushed and killed.

The McCoys got revenge in 1888, when Jim Vance was killed by Asa's son-in-law Franklin "Frank" Phillips.
