About Audrey Celina Balchen
BALCHEN--Audrey, passed away peacefully at her home in New York City Saturday morning, October 10th. Her life of 93 years was distinguished and elegant. She was the devoted wife of Colonel Bernt Balchen, Polar Aviator, who predeceased her in 1973. She was born in New York City August 1, 1916, the daughter of John Edward Schipper and Marie B Schipper. The family soon established residence in Barberry Bend, Pleasantville, NY where she spent her youth and studied art and sculpture. She then attended George Washington University in the mid 1930s studying International Affairs and soon after was one of three women to graduate from Columbia University with a degree in business. She rose to Research Director at Fairchild Publications where she was not only employed but frequently published. Although living and working in New York City, her roots were in Westchester and she maintained a home in Chappaqua, NY where she enjoyed gardening and her flowers. It was here that she met her late husband and with her talents in research dedicated her time to assuring his legacy with exhibits in the Smithsonian, Library of Congress and Air Force Academy. She was as kind as she was generous and she supported many causes, especially Native Americans, the arts, and the New York Public Library. Her love of travel included many trips on the Queen Mary and QE2 and she regularly attended the symphony and ballet. She is survived by her brother Robert of Stratton, Maine, numerous nieces and nephews and a stepson Lauritz and predeceased by her brother Edward, Paul and sister Marie. Memorial Services at Crestwood Memorial Chapel are Thursday, 7-9pm with burial Friday at the family plot at Kensico Cemetery Valhalla, NY.
