About August Carl Raasch
The "German Settler" Durrheim Family in South Africa by Erleen T West (nee Durrheim) researched 2009/2011
Pauline was the daughter of Franz 'Otto' Raasch and Marie Burmeister. Otto was 6 years old when his parents Wilhelm and Louise Raasch (both age 33) from Alt Dammerow, Pomerania, Prussia, Germany immigrated to South Africa with his siblings Herman (8) Gustav (4) and Carl (3). Otto and Marie had 9 children: Louise married Paul Brugmann, Auguste married Theophilus Berndt, Anna married Alexander Andreka, Herman August, Wilhelmina married Hugo Berndt, Edward, Friedrich, Julius and Pauline.
The birth date of August Carl Raasch (1855-1910) was 11 May 1855: the sole extant primary source for his birth date is his gravestone at the Frankfort Cemetery, which was photographed by Robert Speirs in December 2021.
When August Carl Raasch died on 28 May 1910 the country was still called the Cape Colony; it became the Cape Province of the Union of South Africa on 31 May 1910.
In 1909 August Carl Raasch applied for, and was granted, letters of naturalization.
