Notes for AUGUST FREDERICK PETT: Pett Family History August Pett was born 24 April 1858 in Lupnow, Pommern, Prussia, in an area that was occupied by the Germans in WWII and divided between Germany and Poland after the war. Lupnow is currently in Poland. August Pett's wife, Maria Elisabeth Marschke, the daughter of Karl F. Marschke and Caroline (or Catherine) Louise (or Lois) Bruhnke, was born in Kottow, Pommern, Prussia, 06 April 1863. Kottow is a village about 8 km. from Lupnow. August Pett immigrated to America in early 1884, arriving at the port of New York on January 3. His passage was on the ship "America" which embarked from Bremen. (Germans to America, vol. 53) He settled in North Dakota and is listed in the 1885 Census for the Dakota Territories as "August Pett, 27, laborer, from Germany." In 1885 he paid for the passage of his mother, Auguste or Augustina Sprockhoff, her husband, August F. (probably Frank) Sprockhoff, his half-brother,.Otto Sprockhoff, his half-sister, Terese Sprockhoff, and his fiancee, Maria Marschke, from Gennany to America. When they arrived in New York, they boarded a train for Casselton, North Dakota. According to a book on the history of Barnes County, North Dakota, "Otto Sprockhoff: son of Mr: And Mrs. Frank Sprockhoff was born in Darsin, Prussia (very near Lupnow) on February 18, 1871. August Pett, his half-brother, sent the family a pass to cover their fare to America. When the Sprockhoffs arrived in Casselton, North Dakota, they had no means of transportation. They walked out to the Charlie Dane Farm near Davenport. The following spring, Otto's father (August's step-father) got a job on the Gill farm, which was one of the smallest bonanza farms in the region. Some years later the Frank Sprockhoff family moved to the Fingal area where he bought a tract of land five-and-one-half miles from Fingal. Otto spent the winter months attending public school in Sheldon, North Dakota, and clerked in the Goodman Store there during his spare time. August Pett married Maria Elisabeth Marschke on 13 November 1885 in Sheldon, North Dakota, now Cass County. The witnesses were Heinrich Trapp, August Marschke, and Ida Trapp. According to the History of Barnes County: “the August Petts settled on a farm in the section where Ray and Ethel Stangler now live." In 1886, August paid for the passage ofhis wife's family from Prussia to America. Karl Marschke, 54; "Catha" Marschke, 53; Ida Marschke, 29; Paul Marschke, 18; Reinhold Marschke, 16; Friedriche Marschke, 14; and Franz Marschke, 9, arrived in the port of Baltimore on 11 November from Bremen.
