About Augusta Rowe

Augusta Lamparski was born in 1881 in Western Poland near the German border. She met and married Henry Artman from Germany just after the turn of the century and they soon emigrated to the United States, finally settling in Fairfield, Connecticut.

Augusta was a strong woman both physically and in spirit. Besides her native Polish, she also spoke fluent German. Regardless of her inability to read or write English, Augusta had eleven children which she raised to be fine, happy and healthy first generation Americans.

Their childrens' names are unknown, unknown, unknown, unknown, Otillia Artman Waterhouse, Pauline Artman Spray, Amelia (Millie) Artman Knecht, Henry Frederick Artman, Frieda Artman Mayer, Frederick (Freddie) Artman and Ernest William Artman. After her husband, Henry's death Augusta married Charles Rowe.

Note: Grandson Rick Artman (would have been known as Richard) was born circa 1950 to Norma Lea Morgan and Ernest William Artman. He was stillborn. He is buried in Mountain Grove Cemetery in the same grave as grandparents Augusta and Henry Artman). (The gravestone does not mention his name).



Obituary: Bridgeport Post Oct 22, 1959

Mrs. Charles Rowe Mrs. Augusta Artman Rowe, of 163 Fairchild Ave, Fairfield, widow of Charles Rowe, died today in her home.

Services will take place at 1:30 p.m. from the Franke Polke and Son Funeral residence. 1546 Fairfield Ave. and at 2 o'clock in St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church. The Rev. Rudolf Ludwig, pastor, will officiate and burial will be in the Mountain Grove Cemetery.

A native of Poland, Mrs. Rowe had lived in the United States 43 years and made her home in the Brdgeport area since 1923.

Surviving are three sons, Henry Artman of Milford; Frederick and Ernest Artman, of Bridgeport; four daughters, Mrs. Otilia Waterhouse and Mrs. Pauline Spray, both of Norwalk; Mrs. Amelia Knecht, of Newtown; Mrs. Freda Mayer, of Bridgeport; a sister, Mrs. Julia Williamson, of Norwalk; 20 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.
