Augustus Hamer's father (John) Peter Hammer was born in Bucks County, PA and served as a blacksmith in the American Revolution. Augustus married his second wife Caroline Tichenor (Tichnor) on Sept. 24th 1854. He worked with the B&O Railway and later the C&O. While living in Hinton, WV in the 1880's as a Wrecking Master for the railway, was called one night to supervise a wreck in Big Bend Tunnel, where he lost an arm in process of the cleanup.

His children, Bert, Sanford, Jennie May, Scott, George and Cora were at one time or another employed by the C&O. Scott lost his right arm in an accident of which his father sometimes remarked "We buy one pair of gloves between us"
