About Aung San Suu Kyi
Aung San Suu Kyi MP AC is a Burmese politician, diplomat, author, and a 1991 Nobel Peace Prize laureate. The first and incumbent State Counsellor (a position akin to a prime minister leader) of Myanmar, she is also the leader of the National League for Democracy and played a vital role in the state's transition from military junta to partial democracy. Of late, she has attracted considerable criticism for having enabled the state-perpetrated genocide of Rohingyas.
The ousted leader of Myanmar Aung San Suu Kyi, 77, has been sentenced to a total of 33 years in prison in her long legal battle, since she was overthrown by a coup in February 2021 and which culminated this Friday in a last sentence of 7 years in prison. A military court, located in the Naypyidaw prison where the Nobel Peace Prize laureate is serving her sentence, today issued the latest sentence for five counts related to the leasing of land, and for the purchase and rental of helicopters.
