About Austin Alexander Baker, Jr

Austin Alexander Baker, Jr., 77, of Bolivar, died August 13, 2006 at Jackson-Madison County General Hospital.

He was born in Bolivar on May 16, 1929, third and last child of Austin Alexander and Annie Lea (McAnulty) Baker. He attended Bolivar Elementary School and graduated from Bolivar Central High School in 1947.

His first year of college training was in the College of Engineering at the University of Tennessee at Knoxville, 1947-48. The next year was spent working with his father in the family business, Baker Manufacturing Company, at Bolivar. In the fall of 1949, he enrolled in Tulane University, College of Architecture, at New Orleans where he studied for three years. He transferred to Auburn University in 1952 where he continued his education in architecture, majoring in Building Construction. He was an active member of Sigma Chi, social fraternity, at all three universities.

At the end of his second year at Auburn, he completed his training in the Reserve Officers Training Corp. and was called to active duty in the U. S. Army Engineers with the rank of Second Lieutenant. Earlier, he had been a member of the Tennessee National Guard from June, 1948 until April, 1950, serving in the enlisted ranks. He served two years with the Corp. of Engineers at Fort Belvoir, Virginia, and Fort Campbell, Kentucky, terminating the tour of duty with the rank of First Lieutenant. He remained a Reserved Commissioned Officer until his honorable discharge in August, 1961.

Upon leaving the Army in May, 1956, he returned to Bolivar and entered the family business with his father.

He was elected Justice of the Peace and Magistrate for Bolivar, 1st Civil District, Hardeman County, on November 10, 1969, and served two terms in that capacity until 1978. In 1971, he was elected to serve on the Board of Directors for the Hardeman County Savings Bank of Bolivar, replacing his uncle, Dr. B. F. McAnulty, upon his death. He served as Chairman of the Bolivar Historical Commission.

On August 28, 1965, Austin and Ailene Eddleman were married at the First Presbyterian Church at Somerville by Rev. E. M. Nesbitt.
