About Austin Birchard

Austin Birchard was a beloved uncle of U.S. President Rutherford B. Hayes. He was born on 5 December 1793 in Wilmington, Windham Co., VT. He died on 12 September 1879 in Fayetteville, Windham Co., VT. He was buried on 15 September 1879 in Fayetteville, Windham Co., VT. Funeral services held at the Congregational Church.

Austin Birchard was a member of the Old Council, a coordinate branch of the Vermont State Government in 1833-34 and 1841; he was elected to the Council of Censors. In 1846 he became a state senator. He was a merchant in Newfane for many years, having branch stores in various towns. In 1854 he became treasurer of the Windham County Savings Bank, an office he held for 20 years. He was handicapped by deafness. He purchased the interest of Rutherford Hayes, Jr., in the store of Noyes, Mann, and Hayes at Dummerston, VT when Hayes removed to Delaware, Ohio, in 1817. Austin founded the first bank at Newfane, VT.
