AUSTIN SHOFNER SERVICES TODAY

Shelbyville services for Austin William Shofner, 81, retired educator and longtime Republican leader in Bedford County, will be at 3 pm today at Howell Funeral Home.

SHOFNER DIED Friday night in Bedford County General Hospital.

He was a graduate of Peabody college, Nashville, and received additional degree at the University of Tennessee at Knoxville.

Shofner served for 25 years as a member of the Bedford County Election Commission. He was chairman of the Bedford County Republican executive committee for 20 years and served as the Bedford County presidential elector for the republican party in 1964.

He taught for several years in the Hamilton County school system and for 30 years in Bedford County. He was principal of Tullahoma High School for four years and coached basketball, baseball and football in Hamilton County, Bedford County and Tullahoma.

Shofner was president of the Bedford County chapter of the UT Alumni Association.

He operated a farm after retiring from teaching.

Shofner was chairman of the board of directors of Midstate Finance Company, Inc., Shelbyville and Peoples Finance Company, Inc., Tullahoma.

He was past Master of the Whirling Whorley Masonic Lodge in Chattanooga.

Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Rachel Connor Shofner, a son, retired Brig General Austin Shofner, Shelbyville, and six grandchildren.
