Aviv Geffen (אביב גפן, born May 10, 1973) is an Israeli rock musician, singer, songwriter, producer, keyboardist and guitarist. He is the son of writer and poet Yehonatan Geffen and Nurit Makover, brother of actress Shira Geffen, and an alumnus of Rimon School of Jazz and Contemporary Music.

Geffen was and is extremely popular among Israeli youth, who were known during the 1990s as the "Moonlight Children". Politically, he associates with the Israeli left. His music deals with subjects such as love, peace, death, suicide, politics, the army in general and the IDF specifically. He is often criticized for not serving in the IDF, though, officially, he was discharged for medical reasons.[1]

In 2005, he was voted the 59th greatest Israeli of all time, in a poll by the Israeli news website Ynet to determine whom the general public considered the 200 Greatest Israelis.[2]

Geffen's first public performance was in 1984, in the Israeli youth program "Sminiyot BaAvir" on the Israeli Channel 1, in which he sang the song "You're only 40 years old" which his sister wrote and which he composed by himself. In 1987 Geffen participated in the amateur film "Hamitpahat" (The Napkin), for which he wrote and sang the song "Ima" (Mom).

1990s[edit] In 1990, Geffen recorded his first song, "Friend" (Chaver), together with the band "Cats in the Piping". In 1992, he released his first album, It's Only The Moonlight (Ze Rak Or Hayareach). All of its songs were written and the music composed by Geffen himself.

Also in 1992, he played a part in the teenage television series A Matter of Time. That year, he also wrote a song for the Israeli movie The Beach Boys. Aviv performed in clubs with his band "The Mistakes" (Hatauyot) (the Hebrew name is purposefully misspelled in two places).

In 1993, Geffen released his second album, It's Cloudy Now (Achshav Me'unan) which reached Gold in the same year. It was produced by Moshe Levi and Ofer Meiri, who created a typical Geffen sound. Aviv expressed his generation's dissatisfaction with the Israeli government. The title track "It's Cloudy Now" was followed by the question that many Israeli teenagers asked with Geffen – "Do you want change?"

In 1994, Geffen released his third album, Aviv Geffen III, a concept album about negative effects on someone who was forced to join the army, the album did not mark a change in Geffen's sound. The production was handled by Geffen and Lior Tevet. The album featured the major hit "Should I Be In Love With You" (Ha'im Lehiot Bach Mehohav), which was promoted by a video. This album followed in the success of Achshav Me'unan.

In his next album, Nowhere (Shumakom), Geffen took charge of the production, albeit with help from Reuven Shapira (as sound engineer), and producer Moshe Levi. Geffen again wrote all the lyrics and music.

As a political activist, Geffen also expressed the hope for peace with Israel's neighbors.

On November 4, 1995, the Israeli peace political parties had decided to arrange a rally to support the peace process. Geffen was invited to sing in that rally, and surprisingly decided to perform "Cry for You" (Livkot Lekha), which Geffen wrote and gave to Israeli singer Arik Einstein. Only later it was found out the lyrics had prophetically preceded the tragic assassination of Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin later that night.[3] "Cry for You" became a kind of national anthem, and was the song that symboled the Candle Children movement.

In 1996, Geffen released The Letter (Hamikhtav). The Tears Rebellion (Mered Hadmaot) was written after the murder in 1995. Furthermore, it expressed a change and a turning point in Geffen's music. Later, in 1996, Aviv recorded what was known later as "The Israeli version of 'Imagine'", "Let's Walk for the Dream" (Shir Tikva), which expressed deeply Aviv's vision.

In 1997, Geffen released his first compilation, which included a CD with the best songs of the early era, and a second CD which included B-Sides and live performances. An attempt to widen his audience on a global level saw one of Geffen's more unusual albums – "Hollowed" (Halulim). Like his bigger "brothers", it was also produced by Moshe Levi, but unlike them, it is a hard, cold, alienated album, full of distortions. Despite heavy advertising (such as billboards), the album failed commercially.

1999 saw the release of Geffen's 8th studio album – White Nights (Leilot Levanim), which was created under the influence of the changes in Aviv's life. Moshe Levi was again the producer; the combination of the two created a soft and melodic album compared to "Hollowed (Halulim)". The album contained the song "Mexico" which stayed in the Israeli charts for a long time.

2000s–present[edit] In September 2000, Geffen released his 9th album,"Yoman Masa" ("Journey"), for the first time produced by Louie Lahav, and on a new label – "Helicon". Geffen collaborated with two notable colleagues – Daniel Salomon (who joined from the "White Nights (Leilot Levanim)" Tour) and Moshe Levi who was involved in the orchestration. Aviv had recorded 11 melodic songs, with a bonus track – a tribute to Bob Dylan – an Israeli cover to "A Hard Rain's Gonna Fall" (Geshem Kaved Omed Lipol) (translated by his father). The album produced three notable hits for Geffen: "Wake Up" (Uri Ur), "Scars (Zalakot)" & "Journey" (Yoman Masa) (together with Arik Einstein).

In 2001 Geffen met and began to collaborate with British rock star Steven Wilson, with whom he created the band Blackfield. Blackfield combines the musical efforts of both musicians and they perform their own original compositions as well as Aviv's own songs translated into English. The band released three highly acclaimed albums in the mid-2000s (see ahead) and conducted major tours for each release. Their fourth release in 2013 saw Wilson take more of a back seat due to his own increasing workload, opting to produce the album and contribute minor writing and recording work only.

Two years after "Journey" (April 2002), Geffen released his next album: "Memento Mori", which he dedicated to his grandmother who died a short time before the album's release. The name was taken from the Latin phrase, "Remember You Will Die" (meaning one should remember one's mortality). Like his previous albums, "Memento Mori" was soft (but still features harder compositions). The album featured two major hits: "Ray of Light (Keren Or)" and "Moving Forward (Holech Kadima)." From this album came the single Sad Song (Shir Atzuv).

In 2003 the Israeli documentary film "Aviv" was released which focused on Aviv Geffen's life. The film premiered at the Bangkok International Film Festival.

Aviv Geffen, 2005 In 2004 the album "Blackfield" was released which was a result of the collaboration between Geffen & Steven Wilson of Porcupine Tree.[4][5] Its followup Blackfield II was released in early 2007,[6] followed by the live DVD Blackfield: Live in NYC later in the year. Both of the Blackfield albums spawned several hits, notably "Blackfield", "Pain" and "Once". A third album, entitled "Welcome to my DNA" was released in March 2011, in which most songs were written by Geffen. It also contains a renewed version of the track Zigota (זיגוטה) from his album "Memento Mori".

In 2006 Geffen's 11th album "With Time (Im Hazman)" was released. The theme song is a cover to a French chanson by Léo Ferré, which indicated matureness and sobering from the clichés that he symbolized in his initial years. Most recently he compiled a 2CD/1DVD live album, simply titled Live. Lately, Geffen declared himself radical left.[7]

After releasing two albums with Blackfield, Geffen announced in November 2007 that he was recording his first English-language studio album.[8] In January 2008 his single 'End of the World' charted at number one in Poland and he performed at Bush Hall in London on the 31st. He released a single (Silence) at the end of 2008 and is touring throughout January 2009, with dates in Kraków, Berlin, Hamburg, Cologne, Amsterdam, Munich, Paris and London.

In June, he announced that recording had begun at Sarm West Studios, with Trevor Horn producing and Steven Wilson and Mike Garson featuring on the album. These sessions led to his debut English-language album, Aviv Geffen, released towards the end of summer 2009. The debut single released was 'It was Meant to be a Love Song'.

In March 2011, Blackfield's third studio album was released called "Welcome to my DNA".[9]

Beginning in 2012, Aviv Geffen served as one of the four judges on the Israeli version of the singing competition The Voice Israel.

Aviv Geffen’s newest EP – Mr Down & Mrs High was be released in the UK on May 23rd 2012. Part produced by Tony Visconti and Trevor Horn, the EP features four tracks, includes the lead song Mr Down & Mrs High, with 'Jerusalem', Highway' and 'When Summer Comes' .

Musical influences[edit] Over the years, Geffen's musical style has been influenced by rock bands like Pink Floyd, U2, Radiohead, Nirvana, and artists like John Lennon and Bob Dylan. Geffen's piano and guitar playing is mainly influenced by Radiohead's Thom Yorke and U2's The Edge. Geffen has often cited Bob Dylan and Roger Waters as major influences.

נעוריו ותחילת דרכו[%D7%A2%D7%A8%D7%99%D7%9B%D7%94] הופעתו הראשונה של גפן הייתה ב-1984, בתוכנית "שמיניות באוויר" בערוץ הראשון, שבה שר את השיר "כולך בת 40", שכתבה אחותו שירה גפן והלחין הוא עצמו. בשנת 1987 השתתף בסרט חובבים בשם "המטפחת", שעבורו כתב והקליט את השיר "אמא". בשנת 1990 הקליט גפן שיר ראשון, "חבר". בהקלטה ניגנה איתו הלהקה שליוותה אותו באותה תקופה, "חתולים בצנרת". שנות ה-90[%D7%A2%D7%A8%D7%99%D7%9B%D7%94] בשנת 1991 הקליט גפן את אלבומו הראשון, "זה רק אור הירח", עם להקת "התעויוט", המלווה אותו עד היום. האלבום יצא לחנויות ב-25 בספטמבר 1992, ונמכר באותה שנה ב-200 עותקים בלבד, אך לימים נחשב לאחד מאלבומי הרוק החשובים בישראל. גפן, שהיה אז בן 18 בלבד, כתב והלחין את כל שירי האלבום, בעיבודים של משה לוי. מהשירים הבולטים באלבום היו "מיליארד טועים", "שנינו שווים", "אמש" ושיר הנושא "אור הירח". ב-1992 חולל גפן סערה כאשר הצהיר על כך שלא שירת בצה"ל, ואף קרא לא להתגייס לצה"ל. מאוחר יותר שינה את דבריו וטען שלא התגייס מטעמים רפואיים שהתבררו כבעיית עקמת, שגררה השתלת מוט עשוי פלטינה בגבו. הוא ביקש להתנדב ללהקה צבאית אך בקשתו נדחתה. בשנים 1992 ו-1993 שיחק גפן בסדרת הטלוויזיה הפופולרית "עניין של זמן" ששודרה בערוץ 1 בתפקיד אביב, ואף שר שם את להיטו המפורסם "עכשיו מעונן", ממנו התפרסמה השורה "אנחנו דור מזוין...". ב-1992 שיחק בסרט הקולנוע הישראלי של הבמאי צורי מימון "נערי החוף", שעבורו גם כתב ושר את שיר הנושא. בשנת 1992 הלחין לנורית גלרון את השיר "אתה פה חסר לי", שאת מילותיו חיבר יחד עם אחותו שירה גפן‏[1]. השיר היה ללהיט הגדול ביותר מאלבומה של גלרון "בתוך הסערות" שיצא באותה שנה. ב-1993 יצא אלבומו השני של גפן, "עכשיו מעונן", גם הוא בעיבוד והפקה של משה לוי. האלבום הוקדש לחברו ניר שפינר, שנהרג בתאונת דרכים ב-1991. גם באלבום זה כתב והלחין גפן את כל השירים, שמהם זכו להצלחה "עכשיו מעונן", "שיר הסמרטוטים", "בוכה על הקבר", "אל תדאג", "שלכת" ו"אילנה", שאותו כתב על חברתו באותה תקופה, אילנה ברקוביץ'. האלבום זכה להצלחה רבה בהרבה מקודמו, השיר "עכשיו מעונן" היה לאחד השירים המושמעים ביותר ברדיו באותה שנה, ובמצעד הפזמונים השנתי של רשת ג' זכה גפן בתואר "זמר השנה". ב-1993 התארח אביב גפן בתוכנית "פופוליטיקה", והתייצב מול מתנגדיו, ביניהם שר המשפטים לעתיד טומי לפיד, אז אורח קבוע בפופוליטיקה. סביב גפן נאסף קהל מעריצים שהלך וגדל, שאותם כינה "ילדי אור הירח". בסוף אותה שנה יצא גם אלבומה של קרן הכט "קרן הכט", שבו כתב והלחין גפן את כל השירים, פרט לשיר "הראש שלו" שכתב לפי מנגינה של צ'ייקובסקי. גפן גם השתתף באלבום בדואט עם הכט "זה הרגש", שהיה למושמע ביותר מבין שירי האלבום. מתוך האלבום התפרסמו גם השירים "לנצח" ו"תן לי לבד". את השיר "שדה פרוש", שהופיע גם הוא באלבום, כתב גפן כשהיה נער מתבגר אך גנז את השיר עד שהכיר את הכט והחליט לתת לה לבצע את השיר. בשנת 1994 הוציא גפן את אלבומו השלישי, בעל השם הסמלי "אביב גפן III", הפעם ללא להקת התעויוט. האלבום הגיע למעמד אלבום זהב תוך ימים ספורים, וביסס את מעמדו של גפן כאחד היוצרים הבולטים בישראל. האלבום נפתח בתימה המלווה את האלבום כולו: בעיותיו הנפשיות של מתבגר רגע לפני גיוסו לצבא. בין השירים הבולטים באלבום היו "האם להיות בך מאוהב", "כבוד", "משוררים", "הכי קרוב לבד", "מסיבת מתגייסים", "הולך לאיבוד" ו"קבעתי עם האושר". "האם להיות בך מאוהב" זכה בתואר "שיר השנה" ברשת ג', וגפן זכה פעם נוספת בתואר "זמר השנה". באותה שנה גם השתתף בשיר "עכשיו" מהאלבום "רדיו בלה בלה" של החברים של נטאשה. עוד ב-1994 פורסמה בחדשות ערוץ 2 כתבה על מקרי התאבדות של בני נוער, לפי דברי הכתב, בהשראתם של שירים של גפן. גפן הגיב בשידור אצל גבי גזית: "אם הבנתם מדברי או משירים ששרתי שאני בעד התאבדות, זאת טעות חמורה, אני וגם הקהל שלי נגד אלימות, גם שהיא נגד עצמך, וגם כמו שיש פצע ויש יוד, אז יש פצעי נפש ויש פסיכולוגים, ואפילו אני הולך לפסיכולוג ואין בזה שום בושה". עם זאת, גפן נשאל פעמים רבות, לפני ואחרי ההאשמות, האם הוא בעצמו ניסה להתאבד במהלך חייו, אך בכל פעם מחדש בחר להתעלם מהשאלה ועד היום השאלה נותרה ללא תשובה. בחודש אוגוסט של אותה שנה הופיע גפן לראשונה במרכז פסטיבל "ליל אהבה בצמח", שבו שילב הופעה של להיטיו עם אימו, נורית גפן, שבאמצע המופע יצאה מארון קבורה לצלילי השיר "בוכה על הקבר". ב-1995 הוציא גפן את אלבומו הרביעי, "שומקום". האלבום הוקלט בלונדון, ועורר סערה בישראל בשל השיר "שומקום", שכלל את השורה "מי זה שם הולך שיכור, זה ראש הממשלה" שהייתה רמז לשמועות אודות הרגלי השתייה של ראש הממשלה דאז יצחק רבין. בעקבות זאת נאסר השיר להשמעה ברדיו. באותה שנה הופיע גפן אצל דן שילון בתוכנית מיוחדת לקראת יום העצמאות בנוכחותו של רבין. מתוך האלבום התפרסמו גם השירים "אהבנו", "מלאך" ו"שלום". לזכרו של חברו ניר שפינר, שכאמור נהרג בתאונת דרכים ב-1991, כתב גפן את השיר "לבכות לך". גפן נתן לאריק איינשטיין לבצע את השיר, משום שחשב שהוא זקוק לביצוע בוגר יותר מכפי שיוכל לבצעו בעצמו. איינשטיין הקליט את השיר לראשונה בשנת 1994, ומאוחר יותר פעם נוספת עבור אלבומו "יש בי אהבה", שיצא ב-1995. ב-4 בנובמבר 1995 הוזמן גפן לעצרת השלום בכיכר רבין, וברגע האחרון החליט לבצע את "לבכות לך". מספר דקות אחרי סוף השיר נורה ראש הממשלה. השיר קיבל משמעות חדשה והפך להמנון הבלתי רשמי של נוער הנרות. בשנת 1996 יצא האלבום "המכתב", בשיתוף עם התעויוט ומשה לוי. מהשירים המוכרים באלבום היו "עונות", "המכתב", "הקנאה", ו"מרד הדמעות", שנכתב בעקבות רצח יצחק רבין. בסוף השנה יצא גפן למסע הופעות ברחבי אירופה. בשנה זו הוא התחתן עם אילנה ברקוביץ', שהייתה חברתו 4 שנים. במהלך השנה יצא הספר "השירים האסורים", שהכיל את מילות ותווי שיריו מהאלבומים שיצאו מ-1992 ועד 1996. בפסח 1997 יצא אלבום האוסף הכפול של גפן "ירח מלא - האוסף", שכלל עשרים שירים מאלבומיו ושירים שנגנזו מהם, כ"עניין" ו"אני פרפר", שירים אותם ביצע במסגרות שונות והופיעו באלבום של גפן לראשונה ("חבר", "נערי החוף", "אבא תרנגול"), ושני שירים חדשים - "סוף העולם" בשיתוף עם ברי סחרוף ו"שיר תקווה". שניהם הפכו להמנוני רוק, ונכנסו לקלאסיקת המוזיקה הישראלית. ב-1998 יצא האלבום "חלולים", הפעם ללא התעויוט, ובייעוץ אמנותי של ברי סחרוף, שהתבטא באלבום רועש יותר, עם דגש על גיטרות חשמליות ואפקטים. האלבום הוקלט בלונדון והיה שונה מאלבומיו הקודמים של גפן מבחינת הצליל, שהיה מתכתי יותר מהצליל החם בדרך כלל של גפן. הייתה זו תקופה שבה גפן הושפע מאוד מהמוזיקה האלקטרונית של להקת פלסיבו, וכמו כן מהלהקה שאותה כינה "הפינק פלויד של ימינו", רדיוהד. המעריצים שחיכו בקוצר רוח לצאתו של האלבום התאכזבו מתוצאת החומרים החדשים, שלא היו דומים לאף חומר קודם של גפן, והאלבום מכר מספר עותקים מועט במיוחד. ב-1999 יצא האלבום "לילות לבנים". האלבום מבוסס כמעט כולו על גירושיו של גפן מאילנה ברקוביץ', והתאפיין בשירים רכים ומלודיים יותר מקודמו, כ"מקסיקו", "השיר שלנו", ו"לילות לבנים". באותה שנה החל גפן בסיבוב הופעות אינטימי, עם קלידן התעויוט דניאל סלומון, שבו הופיע ללא התעויוט, בליווי פסנתר וגיטרה. סיבוב ההופעות גרף הצלחה גדולה, ומאז יוצא גפן בכל חורף לסיבוב הופעות אינטימי. העשור הראשון של המאה ה-21[%D7%A2%D7%A8%D7%99%D7%9B%D7%94]

גפן בשנת 2000 יצא אלבומו של גפן "יומן מסע", אלבום מלודי ומורכב, שהראה, לדברי רבים, כי גפן התבגר והתמתן, בעיקר בשל השיר "עורי עור" ובו הביטוי "מולדת אהובה". במקור כתב גפן "מולדת חשוכה", אך ביטוי זה שונה כדי למנוע פרובוקציה. למרות זאת בהופעות שר גפן "מולדת חשוכה". מתוך האלבום התפרסמו גם הדואט עם אריק איינשטיין "יומן מסע", הדואט עם שלום חנוך "חצר המלך" והשיר "אקדחים שלופים". באותה שנה הצטרף גפן להופעות של להקת רוקפור, וביצוע בהופעה לשיר "שוב לא שקט" יצא כסינגל לתחנות הרדיו. הביצוע נכלל באלבום ההופעה של רוקפור "רוקפור בהופעה". ב-21 ביוני 2002 יצא אלבומו של גפן "ממנטו מורי" ("זכור את המוות"), שהוקלט בקופנהגן שבדנמרק. האלבום מוקדש לסבתו של אביב גפן, גאולה, שנפטרה באותה שנה, וכלל את השיר "שיר עצוב" שנכתב לזכרה. מתוך האלבום התפרסמו גם השירים "ממנטו מורי", "הולך קדימה" ו"קרן אור". בשנת 2003 יצא הסרט התעודי "אביב", בבימויו של תומר הימן, על חייו של גפן. הוא פתח את פסטיבל הסרטים הבינלאומי בבנגקוק, וזכה לאהדת הקהל התאילנדי. בעקבות הביקוש הרב נוספו שתי הקרנות נוספות לסרט. בשנה זו גם יצא הספר "השירים האסורים ב'" ובו מילות השירים לאלבומים שיצאו מ-1997 עד 2002. בשנה זו גם הוציא שיר משותף עם להקת ההיפ הופ הערבי דם. השיר, "פושעים חפים מפשע", נכתב על ידי תאמר נפאר, סולן הלהקה, והולחן על ידי גפן ואף צולם לו קליפ, בו נראה גפן במדי צה"ל. ב-2004 השתתף גפן בתוכנית ספיישל בת 12 פרקים בשם "הבלוג של אביב גפן", בערוץ yesY ב-Yes. הבלוג שודר מביתו של גפן, והועבר גם באינטרנט בשידור חי. התוכנית עוררה תגובות סוערות, ואף צונזרה בשל דעותיו של גפן על תעשיית המוזיקה והבידור בישראל. באותה שנה חבר גפן לסולן להקת פורקיופיין טרי, מוזיקאי הרוק המוערך סטיבן וילסון. הם הקימו יחד הרכב רוק בשם בלאקפילד, והוציאו אלבום ראשון בשם "Blackfield". האלבום הוקלט במשך שלוש שנים באולפנים בלונדון ובישראל, ונערך באולפני אבי רוד באנגליה. היה זה האלבום הבינלאומי הראשון של גפן, שהופץ בעולם על ידי חברת התקליטים הבריטית שמו של הסינגל הוא "עם הזמן", והוא במקור שיר של הזמר הצרפתי לאו פרה ("Avec Le Temps"), שגפן תירגם תרגום חופשי. הסינגל קיבל תגובות חיוביות ממבקרים, שציינו שניכר בו השינוי שחל בגפן. לאחר מכן יצאו גם הסינגלים "מחר", "בשבילך", "זה רק הלב שכואב לך" ו"אין זמן תחת השמש", שזכו גם הם להשמעות רבות בתחנות הרדיו. בשנת 2006 כתב והלחין גפן את מרבית השירים לאלבום "יחפה" של נינט טייב, שאותו גם הפיק מוזיקלית. בין היתר כתב והלחין עבור האלבום את השירים "כשאתה כאן", "הכל יכול לקרות" ו"יחפה". יומיים בלבד לאחר צאתו קיבל האלבום את התואר אלבום זהב. במקביל, בחודש ספטמבר 2006, הגיע גם האלבום "עם הזמן" למעמד זהב. בשנת 2007 יצא הרכבם של גפן וסטיבן וילסון, בלאקפילד, למסע הופעות ברחבי העולם. בפברואר 2007 יצא האלבום השני של ההרכב, "Blackfield II". באותו חודש יצא אלבום אוסף של גפן בשם "רק שירי אהבה", שנמכר בלעדית בסניפי קפה ארומה אספרסו בר. באותה שנה נבחר גפן לתפקיד היועץ האמנותי של תחרות הלהקות הצעירות "Urban MotoMusic 2007". בין היתר הוצע לגפן לשדר בתוכנית הלילה "ציפורי לילה" בגלי צה"ל יחד עם גיא מרוז וגפן נעתר לה. אולם העובדה שגפן לא שירת בצה"ל והעירפול סביב אי שירותו, האם נבע מסיבות בריאותיות או שמא מטעמי מצפון, עוררה התנגדות ציבורית להשתתפותו בתוכנית במסגרת תחנה צבאית הממומנת מכספי משרד הביטחון. עקב התנגדות רחבה זו, החליטו ראשי התחנה לחזור בהם מהכוונה לשבץ את גפן בתוכנית הלילית‏[2]. בשנת 2008 הפיק גפן יחד עם עופר מאירי אלבום לזמרת אלמונית שלקח תחת חסותו, אלכס (שם הבמה של אלכס משה), שליוותה אותו בהופעותיו. האלבום יצא בפברואר 2008, וכלל את הסינגלים "אם תפסיק לאהוב", "ואת שרה" ו"עלים". במרץ 2008 הוציא גפן אלבום הופעה כפול, שכולל שירים שבוצעו בהופעותיו במהלך קיץ 2007. האלבום כלל גם DVD עם קליפים ה-60 למדינת ישראל, ובו נכלל השיר "איך לאהוב אותך" בביצוע המשותף של גפן והזמרת אלכס. השיר בוצע במקור על ידי גלי עטרי ויזהר אשדות ב-1985 בסרט "שוברים". ביולי 2008 הוציא גפן לאור את השיר "הילד של כולנו", שאותו כתב על החייל החטוף גלעד שליט. גפן הכריז שכל ההכנסות מהשיר יתרמו למען החזרתו מן השבי. במרץ 2009 הוציא את הסינגל "אור קטן בלב". בספטמבר 2009 יצא אלבום הסולו הבינלאומי הראשון של גפן, שנשא את שמו. והקריירה בחו"ל הופיע גפן בפסטיבל Southside בגרמניה. לפני הפסטיבל התראיין גפן לתקשורת הגרמנית, הציג את עצמו כזמר נרדף בישראל, טען ש"חצי מהישראלים רוצים אותי מת" ודיבר נגד הכיבוש הישראלי. ריאיון זה עורר תגובות כועסות בישראל, בטענה שגפן מעוות את הדברים. מאוחר יותר, בכתבה שפורסמה בערוץ 2 על גפן, הוא הסביר את הדברים שאמר ואת המקום שממנו הם באו, והוסיף שהוא איננו נציג מטעם המדינה, אלא מייצג את דעותיו שלו רייכל. בפברואר 2011 יצא סינגל שני של גפן ורייכל, "בובות", שאותו כתב גפן והלחינו שניהם ביחד. את שני השירים הפיקו ועיבדו גפן ורייכל במשותף. בנובמבר 2011 הוציא גפן סינגל משותף עם שרון ליפשיץ בשם "נוסטלגיה", שכתב והלחין. השיר זכה להצלחה, והוביל במשך מספר שבועות את מצעדי הפזמונים השבועיים. שיריו המשותפים עם רייכל ועם ליפשיץ נכללו באלבומו של גפן "פסיפס", שיצא במרץ 2012. בשנת 2012 החל גפן לשמש המשיך והשתתף גפן כמנטור ב"The Voice ישראל" עונה שנייה. אופיר בן שטרית, שהייתה הפיינליסטית בנבחרת של אביב, עלתה לדו-קרב הסופי אך הפסידה ללינה מחול. במאי 2013 חשף אביב בהופעתו בקיסריה שיר חדש שכתב, אשר
