Avraham Fahn

Avraham Fahn אברהם פאהן (b. 8 August 1916; d. 19 February 2012) was an Israeli professor of botany at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.

Biography

Fahn was born in 1916 in Vienna, Austria. He emigrated to Mandate Palestine and studied at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, receiving a PhD in 1948.

In 1952, he joined the Hebrew University faculty, lecturing in botany. From 1952 to 1953, he was a research fellow at the University of Cambridge and in 1956 at Harvard University. He became an associate professor at the Hebrew University in 1960 and a full professor in 1965, serving dean of the faculty from 1964 to 1966 and pro-rector from 1969 to 1970.

Following the Six Days War in 1967, Fahn assisted in the restoration of the botanical gardens at the University's Mount Scopus campus. He also served for many years as head of the Forestry Department of the Volcani Institute of Agricultural Research.

Fahn retired in 1985. His books in the anatomy of plant are the source of basic knowledge in many cited academic studies. The standard author abbreviation Fahn is used to indicate this individual as the author when citing a botanical name.

Awards

• In 1963, Fahn was awarded the Israel Prize, in life sciences.
• From 1995 to 1999, he served as Vice-President of the International Association of Botanists.

פאהן נולד בווינה שבאוסטריה. הוא סיים את לימודי הדוקטורט באוניברסיטה העברית בירושלים בשנת 1948. ב-1952 הוא הצטרף לסגל האוניברסיטה והיה מרצה במחלקה לבוטניקה. בשנים 1952–1953 היה פאהן עמית מחקר באוניברסיטת קיימברידג' וב-1956 באוניברסיטת הרווארד

בשנת 1960 קודם פאהן לדרג פרופסור חבר ובשנת 1965 לפרופסור מן המניין. באותה עת הוא שימש דיקן הפקולטה (1964–1966). בשנים 1969–1970 הוא החזיק בתפקיד הפרו-רקטור. לאחר מלחמת ששת הימים ואכלוס הקמפוס של האוניברסיטה העברית בהר הצופים, החל פאהן בסיועם של מיכאל אבישי ומאיר שאואט, בשיקום הגנים הבוטניים האוניברסיטאיים. כמו כן הוא עמד תקופה ארוכה בראש ענף היער של המכון הוולקני

פאהן פרש לגמלאות בשנת 1985. לאורך השנים הוא היה פרופסור אורח באוניברסיטת הרווארד, אוניברסיטת ויסקונסין-מדיסון והמכון הטכנולוגי של ציריך. ספריו בתחום האנטומיה של הצמח היו למקור ידע בסיסי בתחום וצוטטו רבות במחקרים אקדמיים. בשנת 1963 הוענק לפאהן פרס ישראל במדעי החיים. בשנים 1995–1999 הוא שימש סגן נשיא האגודה הבינלאומית לחוקרי צמחים
