Balasundram Naicker (1951 - 2002)
Brief overview:
Balasundram (51), a sugar cane farmer in Tongaat, KZN, was shot in the chest and died, on Saturday 12th October 2002. Superintendent Vasie Naidoo said that his wife, Padmini Naicker (44), had gone to fetch an apron from the washing line, at 04h30, when she was accosted by three armed men. Balasundram and their son Raishen rushed outside, and the attackers opened fire, killing the father and shooting the Raishen in the right thigh.
The attackers then fled on foot, without taking anything. Raishen was in stable condition at Victoria Hospital in Tongaat. His mother was treated for shock at the farm. Police searched the area for the suspects. There was an encroachment on Indian owned farms by squatters in the Verulam/Hazelmere area, between Durban and Tongaat, in 2001 and 2002.
