About Barbara Leslie

LADY BARBARA LESLIE

The Scots Peerage V: p. 378

The Scots Peerage IV: p. 103

Death

A date of death has not been identified for Barbara Leslie. However, no provision was made for a widow in her husband's testament dative dated 2 January 1649 and it would appear, therefore, that she died before this date. Her husband died in May 1658 and it is possible that she died before this last date. [National Records of Scotland, Edinburgh Commissary Court, Testament Dative and Inventory of Sir John Ruthven of Dunglass, knight, reference CC8/8/64]

Marriage

Barbara Leslie married Major-General Sir John Ruthven of Dunglass. Her husband died intestate in May 1648. [National Records of Scotland, Edinburgh Commissary Court, Testament Dative and Inventory of Sir John Ruthven of Dunglass, knight, reference CC8/8/64]

Her Husband's Testament Dative

On 2 January 1649 the testament dative and inventory of Sir John Ruthven of Dunglass was given up by his brother, Sir Francis Ruthven of Carse. It was given up: "In name and behalf of Williame Ruthven minor sone laull to the defunt and onlie excr dative decerni to his sd umqll father be decreit of the Comissar of Edr". No provision was made for a widow, and it would appear, therefore, contrary to what is suggested elsewhere, that Barbara Leslie may have predeceased her husband. Confirmation was granted on 29 January 1649. [National Records of Scotland, Edinburgh Commissary Court, Testament Dative and Inventory of Sir John Ruthven of Dunglass, knight, reference CC8/8/64]
