About Barbara MIller

The below is all highly suspect, for various reasons.

Mackay, Angus. (1906). The Book of Mackay. (St Andrew’s University). Printed by William Rae, Wick. Iye Du Mackay died in November 1572.[14] He had married firstly his cousin Helen, daughter of Hugh MacLeod of Assint.[14] However, as he and his wife were first cousins, their children would be barred by canon law from succeeding their father. They had two sons:

John Beg Mackay. (Killed in a skirmish in 1579 at Balnakeil, parish of Durness).[14]
Donald Balloch Mackay (Progenitor of the Mackay of Scoury branch of the clan.[14] He fought at the Battle of Clynetradwell in 1590 and was ancestor of the famous General Hugh Mackay of Scoury).

Iye Du Mackay married secondly, Christian, daughter of John Sinclair of Duns, Caithness.[14] They had two sons and three daughters:

Huistean Du Mackay, 13th of Strathnaver, who succeeded his father.[14]
William Mackay, 1st of Bighouse. (Progenitor of the Mackay of Bighouse branch of the clan).[14]
Eleanor Mackay, who married Donald Bane MacLeod of Assint.[14]
Jane Mackay, who married Alexander Sutherland of Berriedale.[14]
Barbara Mackay, who married Alexander Macdavid, chieftain of the Clan Gunn.[14]

ID: I36222 Name: Barbara MacKay Sex: F Birth: ABT 1555 in Strathnaver, Sutherland, Scotland Reference Number: 36222 Note: Name: Barbara MACKAY Given Name: Barbara Surname: Mackay Sex: F Birth: abt 1555 in Strathnaver, Sutherland, Scotland Note: The Mackays claim to be descended from Ymore, son of Donald of Strathnaver. He was a descendant of Acheonacher who came from Ireland about the end of the 1100's.

Barbara's father was chief of the Mackays, a powerful Highland clan on Scotland's north coast. Unless they eloped, her husband John must have been a man of some substance.

Barbara's mother Christian Sinclair was a descendant of the lords of the misty isles, the Sinclair Earls of Orkney. These were the same Sinclair Lords of Roslin who built Rosslyn Castle and Rosslyn Chapel near Edinburgh.

Barbara's birthplace of Strathnaver is a region 70 miles north of Inverness.
