Jean Forbes was the daughter of John Forbes, 6th Lord Forbes and Elizabeth Barlow.1 She married, firstly, John Stewart, 3rd Earl of Atholl, son of John Stewart, 2nd Earl of Atholl and Lady Janet Campbell, after May 1542.1 She married, secondly, Alexander Hay of Delgaty, son of Sir Gilbert Hay of Ardendraught and Delgaty and Elizabeth Abernethy, after 17 November 1545.1 She married, thirdly, William Leslie of Balquhain before 17 January 1549/50.1

    She was also known as Janet Forbes.2 As a result of her marriage, Jean Forbes was styled as Countess of Atholl after May 1542.1 From after May 1542, her married name became Stewart.
