About Barnabas Baldwin, Sr.

BARNABAS2, Richard1 (of Milford,Ct)

'There are still some questions about the birth years of Mary and Theophilus....but if Timothy was born in 1695...WHO was his mother if Barnabas did not marry Mary until 1698/99? Henry and Sylvanus could only be children of Mary, since Sarah was long deceased...'

'The record says that Barnabas married SOON after Sarah's death, and on Jan 1, 1698/99 he and Mary, his wife, were received to full communion in Milford church and his first four children were baptised: Thomas, Barnabas, Timothy, and Mary......Theophilus was bpt Oct. 22,1699.'

'It seems very unlikely that any man of that time would have stayed unmarried for a length of time between 1692 and 1698/99...which is what some researchers had determined...making Barnabas and Mary marrying in 1698/99. Especially IF he had 4-5 young children. ' I have not been able to locate any written history to transfer parenthood from Mary to Sarah for Timothy, Mary or Theophilus.

Curator Erica Howton has researched the Barbour Collection with no results as of 12/14/ see if a determination could be found for any of the above.

Barnabas Baldwin, son of Richard Baldwin and Elizabeth Alsop, was born after July 23, 1665 in Milford, New Haven Co., Connecticut. He was a posthumous child, and as the law then stood in Connecticut, was not entitled to, nor did he receive, in distribution, any share of the large estate of his father. Afterwards, in 1711 or 1712, his brothers and sisters, ashamed that he was left nothing, conveyed to him Hogg Meadow, then a swamp, reciting that this was done because he was not included in the distribution of Richard's estate, in 1665. But as the country was cleared up, "Hogg Meadow" became by far the best part of the township and made Barnabas a wealthy man.

He married 3 times: 1st to SARAH BUCKINGHAM, by whom his two eldest children were born; she died before Dec. 3, 1692; 2nd (on Dec. 3, 1692 in Milford, Conn) to MARY BOTSFORD and 3rd, to ABIGAIL (no children).

Children by Sarah: Thomas (b. before 1692;bpt 1/1/1698; rec'd from grandfather Buckingham a gift of land),and Barnabas (bpt 1/1/1698; born as early as 1692).

  • Note: The will of her father, Samuel Buckingham, dated 12/3/1692, remembers the husband (Barnabas) and the oldest and youngest (Thomas and Barnabas) of his deceased daughter.

Children by Mary: Timothy (1695; bpt 1/1/1698), Mary (bpt. 1/1/1698; d. bef. May 1740, leaving no issue), Theophilus (bpt. 10/22/1699), Henry (bpt. 6/4/1702; d. bef. May 1740, leaving no issue), and Sylvanus (9/17/1706; bpt 11/15/1706).

The will of Barnabas does not mention Mary or Henry, but does mention the rest as "all my children." He leaves "to ye College ar New Haven, forty shillings." He was one of the grantees of the charter of Derby, and in 1738, one of the fifteen inhabitants of Milford incorporated, with others of New Haven, to make the parish of Amity. He was a Selectman of Milford, a collector of Rev. Samuel Andrew's rates, and, with Samuel Clark Sr, an appraiser of Gov. Treat's estate in 1710. On Sept. 2, 1688, he was, with his brother Theophilus, witness in Milford to a deed from Sylvanus to Zachariah. About 1692, he had from Milford, on distribution, the 90th lot, nine acres (M. Rec.2.p.72, and p.126). On Mar. 1, 1693/4 he conveys to Joseph Peck Jr and William Fowler.
