About Barnett Bluestone
Barnett Bluestone was born Baruch Blusztejn to Sarah Tadelis and Samuel Nathan Bluestone in Poland 1862. He was their first child. Not much is known about his childhood but he likely grew up in Ilow just outside Plock in Poland. In 1885 he married Matilda (Tema) Karp. They had eight children together whom was born in Poland including one stillborn girl. In early 1901 he immigrated with his brother Isaac to London. He stayed with his uncle Harris and worked as a Corset Maker. On the 14th June 1901 his wife and children left Poland to join him. They had two more children together that were born in London. He moved to 30 James Place (now Creechurch Place, London, EC3) which was a slum. Fortunately a few years later he moved to 53 Christian Street, E1 which wasn’t bad but his home was overcrowded with his family. He then was employed as a Tailors Machinist, he worked in quite horrific conditions and his children whom weren’t in education also worked. In 1912 the workers went on strike over working conditions and things did eventually improve for them.
He then moved to 9 Scawfell Street, London E1 with his family. He worked for H Segal at 84 Greenfield Road, London E1. His wife died in 1920.
In 1927 he died of Chronic Nephritis (Inflammation of the Kidneys), he also had a Cerebral Haemorrhage (Stroke).
