Edith says that her mother Helen was Polish, yet census records from 1900 and 1910 note that the parents of Helen's mother Mary were born in Germany. At the time, though, Poland was part of Germany, so it seems safe to say that given Edith's firsthand account, plus the fact that their last name was Bartoski, that they were actually Polish.
