GEDCOM Note

General Notes: Lindauer Bros. & Co.

Back in 1859 in Joliet, Baruch (Benjamin) Lindauer (b. 1839) had crossed Morris

Einstein's path. Lindauer, a weaver by profession, had just arrived from Jebenhausen,

and at that time was engaged in peddling goods between Chicago and Joliet, where

Einstein may have employed his services. He later entered the employ of Martin

Clayburgh, subsequently Einstein's partner in business. In 1861 Lindauer established

himself as a dealer in general merchandise in Mount Carmel, Illinois. In 1866 he

returned to Chicago, and in1867 the wholesale clothing firm of Rohrbach, Lindauer &

Co. was founded by Ulrich Rohrbacher (b. 1838), Lindauer, and Liebman Levi (b.

1813), all from Jebenhausen. In the old country Lindauer had attended the Academy

of Weaving in Reutlingen and then had been the manager of the textile factory owned

by his uncles, J. & S. Einstein, in Jebenhausen. His professional skill and experience

now greatly benefited the company, which also embarked on the manufacture of

woolen goods.

The far-reaching family relations in the dry goods business may have been a valuable

asset in the development of their business: Leopold Rohrbacher (b. 1834) and Morris

Rosenheim (b. 1833), who at that time had established a major dry goods business in

Peoria, Illinois, and other relatives and former neighbors were among their more

important business partners.

In 1869 Ulrich Rohrbacher left the firm, and Mayer E. Lindauer (b. 1837) took his

place. After the great fire of 1871, which caused the firm a loss of $152,000, business

was resumed at the residence of Mayer E. Lindauer,

"where a cutting table was improvised from the door of a coal shed, supported on

trestles, in order that employment might be at once furnished to their workpeople."

In 1874 Seligman Lindauer (b. 1845), another brother, became a partner. In 1886

Lindauer Bros. & Co. ranked "as one of the largest establishments in the West"; in

their manufacturing department alone, they employed about 400 people.

http://f1.grp.yahoofs.com/v1/YE-BRzUMxXVbDovJB1Gk6r4FL3cbgF4lhQxTXW...

Jebenhausen Yahoo Group: Descendants of Manasse Maier Lindauer File, p 27 of 68
