Basil (48), was shot dead in his 12th Avenue, Welverdiend home, just west of Carletonville, on 25th January 2014.
A well-known Welverdiend resident died after being shot during a house robbery last weekend. According to the police, on Saturday morning, around 02:00 a noise at his home's lapa woke Basil Botha up.
He peered through the window and saw men at his vehicle. "Mr Botha yelled at the suspects and ran out and tackled one of the men," Capt. Jabulani Kundethe. Carletonville Police spokesman said. "The next moment two shots were fired." Botha ran back into the house and shouted at his wife that he had been shot, after which a third shot was fired by the robbers.
The robbers did not leave things there, and one followed Botha into the house. Botha ran to the bedroom with his wife, and closed the door. As he and his wife pushed the door closed, the robber tried to get it open it. "Botha told his wife to let the door go. And when it flew open, he hit the suspect with a knobkierie." said Kundethe.
Despite this, the robber fired another shot. Botha was hit in his hand and left chest or shoulder. The suspects stole a cellphone, electrical goods and cash before they ran away. Botha's wife went to seek help. The emergency services were contacted and Botha was taken to the Leraton Hospital. He died Saturday morning just before 05:00 from his injuries.
