Chagall returned to Vitebsk in 1914 from Paris for the wedding of his sister and married his fiancee Bella ROSENFELD on 25 July 1915. Bella was born 15th December, 1895 in Vitebsk to one of the richest families in the town - her father was a merchant and the family owned three jewellery shops. Bella was the youngest in the family. She was a very academic and musical child and studied history, philosophy, literature & method acting {Stanislavsky}.

Their only child, Ida was born in 1916. Bella died tragically young in NY on 2nd Sept 1944. Chagall was heartbroken. Ida herself, died aged 78 in 1994.

After Bella's death, Chagall had a 7-year relationship with Virginia {nee HAGGARD} McNeil and a son David was born in the US in 1946. In 1948, Chagall returned to France with the family and finally settled in Vence [nr Nice]. On his death, Chagall's archive of late works was left to his known heirs, but David McNEIL secured 10 percent of the inheritance.

Chagall married a Russian, Valentina {Vava} BRODSKY in 1952. He died on 28 March 1985 and is buried in the Saint Paul Town Cemetery, Saint-Paul de Vence, France.

We also know that Chagall had twin granddaughters - Bella MEYER and Meret {nee MEYER} GRABER, born in Switzerland in 1955 to Ida nee CHAGALL and Franz MEYER, a Swiss Museum director. Bella, holding a doctorate in medieval history, married in ca 1985 and has two children. In 2003 she was living in Manhattan. She champions her grandfather's works. NICE, France, Aug. 11, 1994— Ida Chagall, the only child of the artist Marc Chagall and the organizer of several expositions of his work, died on Wednesday at her summer home at Brulat du Castellet in southern France. She was 78. 

The cause was cancer, the Chagall museum in Nice said today.

Ms. Chagall was born in Vitebsk, Russia, her father's hometown, to the painter and his first wife, Bella Rosenfeld. She was well known in Parisian art circles and organized exhibitions of Chagall's paintings in several French museums. In 1990 she gave the Israel Museum in Jerusalem 103 works by her father, including drawings he made for two books written by her mother.

She married twice and had three children by her second husband, Franz Meyer, a former director of the Kunstmuseum in Basel, Switzerland.

בלה רוזנפלד שאגאל (ברוסית: Бэлла Розенфельд-Шагал;‏ 15 בדצמבר 1895, ויטבסק – 2 בספטמבר 1944, ניו יורק), סופרת ביידיש, אשתו של מארק שאגאל. בלה שאגאל היוותה נושא לרבים מציוריו של בעלה.

תולדות חייה בלה רוזנפלד נולדה למשפחת סוחרים אמידה מחסידי חב"ד בעיר ויטבסק. היא הייתה הצעירה מבין שבעת ילדי המשפחה. סיימה את הגימנסיה המקומית בהצטיינות ונתקבלה ללימודים בפקולטה למדעי הרוח באוניברסיטת מוסקבה שם סיימה את לימודיה ב-1914. מאותה תקופה עד שנת 1920 הייתה גם פעילה כשחקנית תיאטרון.

כבר ב-1909 פגשה את מארק שאגאל, שהיה באותו זמן חניך חסר כל של הצייר ליאון באקסט. באותה שנה צייר אותה מארק בציורו המפורסם "הכלה עם הכפפות השחורות". לדברי מארק, אהבתם החלה ברגע שהם ראו אחד את השני ונמשכה 35 שנים. בלה הבינה מיד את גודל כשרונו של בעלה לעתיד, ומאז השפעתה עליו ועל יצירתו הייתה מכרעת.

ב-1915 הם נישאו ועברו לפטרוגרד שנה לאחר מכן נולדה בתם המשותפת היחידה - אידה. שנתיים לאחר מכן ב-1918 הם שבו לויטבסק וב-1922 היגרו לליטא ואחר כך לגרמניה. ב-1924 הם התגוררו בפריז ולאחר מכן בדרום צרפת. ב-1931 הם ביקרו בארץ ישראל ומאז התעוררו בבלה געגועים למחוז ילדותה, וסביבתו היהודית, והיא החלה לכתוב את זיכרונותיה בשפת היידיש.

בלה נעצרה במרסיי ב-1941 אולם שוחררה והזוג שאגאל נמלט לארצות הברית.

ב-2 בספטמבר 1944 נפטרה בלה שאגאל מזיהום ויראלי.

יצירתה ב-1945 פרסם מארק שאגאל את ספרה המפורסם ביותר "נרות דולקים" (ברענענדיקע ליכט) שיצא לאור ביידיש בניו יורק. הספר אויר ברישומיו של בעלה, מארק.

ב-1947 יצא ספרה "הפגישה הראשונה" (די ערשטע באגעגעניש) בו היא מתארת את פגישותיה הראשונות עם מארק, וראשית אהבתה אליו.

Берта окончила витебскую гимназию и училась в Москве на Высших Женских Курсах, где изучала историю и философию.
В 1914 г. Шагал возвратился в Россию, в 1915 г. женился на Берте Розенфельд, которую с этого времени называли Беллой. Шагал с женой уехали в Петроград, где Шагал служил в Военно-промышлeнном комитeте. В 1916 г. у них родилась дочь Ида, названная в честь матери Марка.
Во время войны немцы арестовали Шагала (он жил тогда в Париже), но благодаря присуждению ему в США престижной премии Карнеги, он был освобожден и смог уехать с семьей в США.
В 1944 г. Белла тяжело заболела, и Шагал отвез ее в госпиталь. Госпиталь оказался католическим и отказался принять еврейку. Шагал не владел английским языком, и не смог убедить врачей принять ее. Лишенная медицинской помощи Белла умерла у ворот госпиталя. После смерти жены Шагал писал своему другу П.Эттингеру: " ... Я потерял ... ту, кто была смысл моей жизни, моя вдохновительница. Насколько раньше моя жизнь была “легка"...теперь полна трагедий ". Белла сыграла огромную роль в формировании мировоззрения Шагала. После поездки Шагалов в Вильно в 1930 г. Белла написала на идиш книгу воспоминаний о своем детстве и юности “Горящие огни”
