About Benjamin Brown
Benjamin Brown (1777-1853)
Cheapside and home address: The Cedars, Clapham. There are two blocks of flats and council houses built on the site of their house and huge gardens.
"Both he and his wife are buried at Brampton Bryan in Herefordshire, the parish of his wife's family at Stanage Park.
He was the most benevolent man and having no children of his own devoted himself to providing for his nephews and great nephews, the children and grandchildren of Handsome Harry who had died so young.
Extract from the Times 2.12.1845 -
"It was stated on 'change today that the old and highly respectable house of Robert and Benjamin Brown & Co have suspended payment on account of large advances made to one of their connections. The firm was engaged in the lace trade and the liabilities are very large, though it is thought that the private property of the parties will be sufficient to cover them all - they are highly esteemed in the city and the misfortune is mentioned in terms of unusual regret"
Had an illegitimate child who went to Buenos Aires, called Charles Roberts.
