About Benjamin Coe, I
BENJAMIN COE was born at Boxford, co. Suffolk, England and baptized there Oct 18, 1628; when a child of five years brought to New England by his father in the spring of 1634 and by him successively to Watertown Mass., Wethersfield and Stamford Conn. and in 1644 to Hempstead Long Island.
Benjamin Coe has his name first in America as a grantee of lands in 1648 (Printed Records of Hempstead vol 1 p 32)
In 1656 Benjamin joined his father Benjamin Sr. in the founding of Jamaica, L.I. where he became an extensive landholder and permanently resided the remainder of his life, a period of about 40 years.
The Town Records of Jamaica furnish some particulars of Benjamin Coe. At the first town meeting held Feb 18, 1655 6 he was granted a house lot, and at a meeting on Jan 13, 1657-8 he was granted ten acres in the rear of his house lot( Records of Jamaica vol 1 pp 1 ,5, 6) Sept 21, 1671 the town of Jamaica voted to give to Benjamin Coe land upon record in the town book if he build the dam for the mill he is to set up and the town agreed no other dam should be built (Ibid vol 1 p 50) On Mar 17, 1684-5 the town granted liberty to Benjamin Coe and John Hanson to set up a corn mill and a fulling mill on Foster's River (Ibid vol 1 p 113).
Benjamin Coe married before 1660 Abigail Carman, born about 1635, daughter of John and Florence Carman, early settlers of Hempstead LI in 1644.
In 1676 he served as town clerk of Jamaica (Jamaica Town Records, vol. 1. p. 12)

Benjamin Coe, the youngest son of ROBERT & MARY COE, was brought to America on the good ship, "Francis" in 1634 at five years of age.
The first record of Benjamin as an adult is in a land grant at Hempstead, Long Island, New York. In 1656 he joined his father in the founding of Jamaica in Long Island where he resided for the remainder of his life.
He was granted a home lot in Jamaica on February 18, 1655/6 and served as town clerk in 1676, which indicates that he was an educated man. In 1683 he was taxed for seven cows, one horse and 27 acres of land, a total of 85 pounds.
Benjamin Coe was a farmer & a miller. Town records on September 21, 1671 show that he was given land if he would build a dam for a mill and in 1684/5 the town granted liberty to Benjamin Coe and John Hanson to set up a corn mill and a fulling mill on Foster's River.
Benjamin Coe married Abigail Carman, daughter of John & Florence Carman, early settlers of Hempstead, L. I. On March 7, 1686/7, George Woolsey, Sr. & his wife and Benjamin Coe and his wife, Abigail, all of Jamaica conveyed to John Moutfort five acres of land in Jamaica. He also disposed of various tracts of land in 1689 & 1692.
The last record of Benjamin Coe appears on a "ministerial subscription list" in Jamaica dated January 1, 1693/4. There is no record of his death, no will or records of probate left.
