COIT, BENJAMIN BILLINGS, son of Capt. Benjamin and Sarah (Lathrop) Coit, was born in Norwich, Conn., April 10, 1801, died April 16, 1867, in San Francisco, of heart disease, while walking in the street, at the age of 66.
He graduated at Jefferson Medical College, Philadelphia, 1826, practiced medicine, principally in New York City, with great success till 1849, when he removed to California. He will long be remembered in San Francisco for his skill as a physician and for his rare social qualities.
He married in 1832, Adelaide, daughter of William Johnson, of New York City; had four children, two of whom have died. Adelaide, his eldest child and the wife of Capt. S. Milligan, U. S. A., died Dec., 1861, aged 24. The youngest, Theodore T., died in 1855, aged 8.
The eldest son, Benjamin H., married the daughter of Dr. Charles Hitchcock, of San Francisco, and is Chairman of the Board of Brokers of that city.
Margaret J., married May 9, 1878, Walter G. Curtiss, M. D., a graduate of Dartmouth, who has been for many years Quarantine physician at Wilmington, N. C.
The widow of our Classmate is living at Annandale, Hunterdon Co., N. J.

According to Richard H L Chichester, III, Contributor # 46953186, the above historic biography is in error regarding Mr. Billings's mother's name. His mother was Sarah (Coit) Coit, daughter of Sarah Lathrop and William Coit of Norwich, Connecticut. ---
