About Benjamin Emanuel
Benjamin, a "well-known and highly respected citizen" of New Orleans, died there at his Euterpe Street home on Tuesday, 29 January 1907, at the age of eighty-seven years and ten months. He immigrated with his parents to the United States as a child and grew up in Virginia. He first entered the "mercantile business" at Memphis, Tennessee, where he was a partner in the successful wholesale grocery house, D. H. Marks & Co. He moved to New Orleans in 1858, but after a few years relocated to Austin, Texas. At the close of the Civil War he returned to New Orleans and began work at Schmidt & Ziegler, continuing there until his retirement at the age of seventy-three. Benjamin was preceded in death by his wife, the former Julia Marks, whom he married in 1847. Eight children survived him: George W. Emanuel, G. D. Emanuel, Simeon Emanuel, Mrs. J. E. Samuels, Corinne Emanuel, Miriam Emanuel, Cecile Emanuel, and Jessica Emanuel. Rabbi Leucht of Touro Synagogue, where Benjamin had served for many years as Director, conducted the funeral services on Thursday, 31 January 1907, at ten o’clock. Interment followed at the "Cemetery of the Dispersed of Judah."
