About Benjamin Harris

Benjamin Harris was the son of Claiborn and Judith Harris.

Benjamin was born in North Carolina in 1754. He received a land grant from King George III of England, dated August 23, 1765. The acreage was reportedly located in Granville, South Carolina. Though there is also a Granville in North Carolina. I'm not sure as of now which Carolina it was.

This land grant did not, however, prevent Benjamin from fighting for American independence when the Revolutionary War broke out.

Benjamin was drafted under Capt. Richard Taylor and General Rutherford, of North Carolina. He enlisted in the 3rd Regiment, on June 1, 1777.

He was reportedly taken prisoner on January 9, 1779. Thereafter, Benjamin served under General Greene.

In addition, Benjamin served in the militia after the fall of Charleston and provided subsidiaries for the Continental Line.

Benjamin also fought in the battle at Guilford Courthouse.

After the war Benjamin spent several years living in Pendleton, South Carolina, where he met his wife Karen. The couple would eventually move to Gwinnett County, Georgia, as Benjamin received a land grant of 250 acres there as a result of his Revolutionary War services.

Benjamin and his wife Karen Happoch Gillison had 9 children.

  1. Archibald (b.1789 - d. 1856)
  2. Mary (b. 1792 - d. 1862)
  3. Wyatt (b. 1795 - d. 1880)
  4. Elizabeth (b. 1796 - d. 1869)
  5. Nancy (b. 1797)
  6. Overton (b. 1798 - d. 1894)
  7. James G. (b. 1799 - d. 1857)
  8. Lorenzo Dow (b. 1804 - d. 1870)
  9. Ezekial (b. 1808 - d. 1898)
  • In Benjamin's military records, he is listed as having married Sophia Williams. Was this a transcription error? Was Benjamin married twice? If so, what happened to Sophia? Was she killed during the war? Did she die of disease or during childbirth?

Most estimates put Benjamin's marriage to Karen around 1792. If true, Archibald Harris's birth would definitely indicate that Benjamin had been married previously.

Additionally, it would explain why Benjamin would have conceivabley been married to Karen so late in life.

Research is ongoing.
