Benjamin Hawkins

Benjamin Hawkins was an early settler of the area that became Buncome County, North Carolina. The Act passed in 1791 by the North Carolina Legislature to form Buncombe County named Benjamin Hawkins as one of a three man committee to select the location of the courthouse and jail. He served as a Trustee of the Newton Academy, the first school located west of the Blue Ridge.

Benjamin Hawkins owned a 700 acre parcel of land located in the crook of the French Broad River on which he lived and raised his 13 children. The parcel of land is now a part of the Biltmore Estate. On it are located the Winery, the Inn on Biltmore and the Antler Hill shops.

Benjamin Hawkins was a successful farmer raising livestock for sale in Charleston, South Carolina, and feed which he marketed to drovers running livestock through Buncombe County. He also owned a 300 acre farm further down the drover trail in the Greeneville District of South Carolina which he devised to his son James who lived there.

His three older children remained in Buncombe and Haywood County, North Carolina. Most of the other children migrated to Georgia when settlement opened in the western portion of that state. The home of his daughter, Elizabeth Hawkins Smith, which was constructed in about 1840 has been preserved as an example of early architecture in the Atlanta area and has been moved to the Atlanta History Museum where it is open for tours daily and is known as the "Tulley Smith House".
