About Benjamin Lockwood
BENJAMIN LOCKWOOD, son of Richard Lockwood of Thurstonland, was born about 1703. He was baptized on August 25, 1703 at All Hallows Parish Church, Kirkburton, West Yorkshire, England.
Benjamin married Mary Forrest on October 12, 1724 at St Leonard, Shoreditch, Middlesex. They went on to have fourteen children. Seven sons, of which two were twins and seven daughters.
The family settled at St Giles, Cripplegate where Benjamin worked as a ships carpenter. From London land tax records for the years 1752/3/4 we are able to find out Benjamin's address of Maidenhead Court, Cripple Ward Without Walls, City of London.
In John Strype's 1720 survey of the Cities of London and Westminster he describes Maidenhead Court as
... a handsome square open Place, with good Buildings; having a wide entrance for Cart or Coach, with a Gate to shut up a Nights. Nigh to this Court, is a large Yard for Livery Horses. Paved Alley, long and ordinary, runs up into Staining street, by the Churchyard Wall of Staining Church; and thence into Lilly pot lane, which leads into Noble street.
Benjamin passed away in 1759 from consumption, which is known today as Tuberculosis or TB. He was buried July 8, 1759 at St Giles, Cripplegate, London.
